    Accommodations / Hot Spring
Akita Pref. Sembokushi Tazawakobonai Komagatake 2-1
This onsen hotel in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture allows day trips, and is popular with female visitors for its meticulous service and modern atmosphere. One can enjoy “gold” and “silver” source water in seven different baths. It is famous for an open air mixed bathing area where one can look out over the Sendachi River, offering the true charm of a secluded hot spring. Women can wear towels in the mixed bathing area. With the accommodation plan, guests can try the local kiritanpo (mashed rice pressed on a skewer and toasted) cuisine too.

Did a one day onset hopping in the area. This is one of our favourite. The onset overlooking the water is amazing just that it is for both male and female at all times. The view is still too amazing...

This art museum located in the Nakadori district of Akita Prefecture’s Akita City opened in 1967. It moved to its present location in 2013, and was redesigned by architect Tadao Ando. The museum stores and exhibits numerous famous artworks, though the bulk of its collection is from 1930s Western-style painter Tsuguharu Foujita. Sights to see include the more than 20-meter long mural “Annual Events in Akita.” The unique architecture is a must-see, featuring elements such as a spiral stairway without any supports and a pond that looks out towards Senshu Park.

When I visited, I was surprised that I could not pay my entry with credit card. After a walk for an ATM, and two shop later, ATM didnt work at he first shop, I finally got in. The only impressive...

This statue is on the west bank of Lake Tazawa, in Aza-Katajiri Nishiki-cho Saimyoji, Semboku City. It's based on the Lake Tazawa legend of Princess Tatsuko, a young girl who prayed for eternal youth and beauty, and whose wish was granted when she drank the waters of a magical forest spring and was turned to a dragon, the guardian spirit of the lake.

I guess it is the most popular tourists round the lake. If you drive round the lake, dont just go there. There are other nice places around the lake.

One of the best viewing platforms in the Lake Towada area, visitors can enjoy picturesque scenery, including of course the magnificent lake as well as Mt. Ohanabe in the Towada caldera and the Hakko Mountain Range. The site also has toilets and a souvenir shop, making it the perfect place to stop for a rest in the middle of a drive.

The Omoriyama Zoo opened in 1973 and is approximately 8.8 hectares in size. The zoo has a characteristic terrain being surrounded by various trees and plants, and has a spring water lake called “Shiohikigata” in the center. There are 97 kinds of animals kept in the zoo and it takes approximately 90 minutes to leisurely walk around seeing them. There is also a visitor center, snack corner, the “Asove Forest” with large playground equipment, and an observation platform as well as Omoriyama Amusement Park “Aniba.” It is approximately 15 minutes from Akita Minami Interchange on the Akita Expressway.

Cant beat the price! Sure, the zoo doesnt necessarily have the most impressive collection of animals, but you sure get lots of value for the money!

The former miso and soy sauce brewery was founded in 1853. The brick storehouse, built in the middle of the Meiji period, gives an atmosphere of long ago. You can enter the building and view the fusuma (sliding doors), hand-painted by Nishimiya Reiwa, free of charge. In the black plastered warehouse once used for storage, you can taste miso soup and pickles. You should definitely try the additive-free, naturally produced goods.

You see many grain storage buildings, non combustible, throughout Japan, but this one really catches you attention. It is on the opposite end of town from the samurai houses.

The National Important Cultural Property designated Korakukan was built in 1910 as a theater in the Meiji period. Kurogo (stage assistants dressed in black) explain the history and characteristics of the playhouse, the stage equipment and the dressing room to visitors, and plays are still performed. There is also a shop and a buckwheat soba noodle restaurant in the hall. Lunch boxes can be ordered three days in advance, so visitors can eat and drink while watching a play at their seats. It is approximately three minutes by car from Kosaka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.

Kosaka Railroad Railpark is a railway theme park developed using a disused railway station. The station originally formed part of a mine railway built to serve the Kosaka Mine, which at one point had a higher annual output than any other mine in Japan. The station buildings appear exactly the same as they did when the railway was still in the use, and carefully-restored locomotives and rolling stock are on display. There are rail-bikes and tourist railcars, enabling visitors to enjoy a unique railway experience. Accommodation is available in the “Blue Train Akebono” sleeper cars parked in the station area.

Akita Areas

around-area-map

Famed for its sake and samurai, Akita prefecture offers quintessential Japanese culture in a non-touristy setting. Alongside the celebrated rice paddies and historical sites of the region lies dramatic natural scenery in the form of the rugged coastline of the Oga Peninsula and the Dakigaeri Gorge, best visited in autumn, when the leaves begin to change color.
