- (Provided by service)The Imperial Palace East Garden was created on land that had formerly formed part of the Honmaru, Ninomaru and Sannomaru zones of Edo Castle, during the construction of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo; the East Garden is open to the public. A number of historical remains and vestiges of Edo Castle can be seen in the East Garden, including part of the Tenshu-dai (the foundation platform for the castle’s main tower), the Ote-mon Gate, the Hyakunin Bansho guardhouse, etc., and as a result the East Garden attracts large numbers of both overseas and domestic tourists. The East Garden also has a wealth of natural beauty, including the “Prefectural Trees” presented to the Garden by every prefecture in Japan, making it a popular place for a stroll or just to sit and relax.

- (Provided by service)This is a Japanese tea house with 400years of tradition located in a dangerous spot of the Tokaido road, halfway up Mt. Hakone. During the Edo period, the tea house was used as a rest area before the Hakone checking station, while nowadays it is more familiar as a rest area for hikers walking through Hakone. The production process for “amazake” (a traditional Japanese drink made from fermented rice) has remained unchanged since ancient times, using koji (rice malt) has been used in the fermentation process since the Edo period; the amazake is non-alcoholic, has a gentle sweetness even though it is produced without sugar, so it has been used to good advantage by travelers to get rid of fatigue. There are also packs of amazake which you can buy to take home. One of the shop’s specialties is also “Chikara-mochi” (a glutinous rice cake) which is gently baked over charcoal until it puffs up.

- (Provided by service)An atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Just about 160 meters northwest of the bomb’s hypocenter was the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, which was built in 1915. The building was destroyed by the explosion’s blast and heat rays, and while the ceiling was burned, miraculously the center portion of the main building escaped destruction, and the round steel frame of the dome on the top that remained came to be called the “A-Bomb Dome.” It is a building to tell future generations about the tragedy of war and destruction, and is registered as a world heritage site as a symbol to appeal to the world for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the importance of enduring peace.

- (Provided by service)A Tendai sect Buddhist temple which is the 27th station on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Founded in 966 by the priest Shoku, due to its high status, it is nicknamed the Mt. Hiei (a mountain sacred to the Tendai sect) of the West. The entire top of Mt. Shosha is dotted with the temple’s buildings, such as the great hall which serves as the main temple nave, the refectory, and Jogyodo Hall. Today, visitors can take a ropeway to Sanjo Station, the closest station to the temple, after which it’s an approximately one kilometer/20 minute walk along the temple path before reaching the Maniden Hall in the center of the mountain. A microbus service is also available. The grounds contain a dining hall where visitors can enjoy traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, as well as a traditional lodging house for pilgrims.

Structures such as the castle tower built in the early Edo period still stand today, and these are also registered as National treasures and national Important Cultural Properties. One of the most prominent theories is that the castle was originally erected as a fort by Akamatsu Sadanori in 1346. Ikeda Terumasa began renovating the castle when he became the lord of the castle after the Battle of Sekigahara, expanding it into the expansive compound seen today. The castle tower is located in the southeast corner of the foundation. The castle looks to be composed of five tiers from the outside and internally is comprised of six floors above ground and one subterranean level. The castle shining a blinding white in the light of the sun is truly a beautiful sight.

The construction ultimately took 19 years to complete. The temple’s spacious grounds are home to such highlights as Japan’s oldest main temple gate (a designated National Treasure), and a toilet constructed in the Zen style as well as a temple nave decorated with a painting of a dragon on its ceiling (both Important Cultural Properties). Four gardens are distributed to the east, west, north, and south sides of the grounds, and each offers charming but different scenery. The northern garden in particular, with its checkerboard of moss and stones, is a must-see.

- (Provided by service)Osaka Castle was built by the Imperial Regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi between 1583 and 1598. The castle was built on a magnificent scale, but was destroyed just 17 years later after the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the destruction of the Toyotomi clan in the Siege of Osaka in 1615. Thereafter, the castle was rebuilt by the Tokugawa shogunate under the command of Todo Takatora but was once again lost due to a fire caused by a lightning strike. The current castle tower is the third generation to stand here and was completed in 1931 through donations from local citizens. The interior of the castle is a history museum and visitors can enjoy information about the history of Osaka Castle and dioramas. The castle was registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property in 1997.

The Temple is laid out in the most ancient Japanese temple architecture style, with the Chu-mon gate, Five-storeyed Pagoda, Kon-do hall and Lecture hall arranged in a straight line running north to south, encircled by a long corridor. The Temple’s stone Torii gateway is said to be the entrance to the Pure Land (also known as the Western Paradise), and is designated as an Important Cultural Property; this gateway was rebuilt in 1294. The Shitenno-ji Temple is famous for the “Doya-doya” Buddhist memorial service which is held there on January 14th every year.

Janjan Yokocho Alley, located in the southeast of Shinsekai, is lined with shops selling Osaka specialties like kushikatsu (fried pork and onions on skewers) and doteyaki (beef sinew in miso and mirin). - Great in the evening for food and lights. Things to see: Glico man: This famous sign was first installed in 1935 and has been altered six times since. It’s such an iconic picture of Osaka’s brightly lit Minami district – a must-see when visiting this part of Osaka. The Moving Crab: Another Dotonbori icon is the big moving crab. Above the Kani Doraku restaurant on the main street in Minami, he cannot be missed. Shinsaibashisuji: One of Osaka’s largest shopping centres/arcades. You can find more Western shops here like H&M and Zara. Hozenji Yokocho: Just a few minutes away from the light neon lights of Dotonbori, you can find Hozenji Yokocho Street. This little alleyway leads to Hozenji Temple and transports you right back in time. It has a lovely atmosphere and it feels like the entire city used to look like this a few hundred years ago. Quite a big contrast from the bright lights a few streets further down!

The courtyard has an elegant suikinkutsu, used to make a special dripping sound, and has been designated as one of the Top 100 Soundscapes of Japan. Mino historic museum is at the back.
