Nezu Shrine is set in lush greenery, with ponds of carp, pathways that are tunnels of small shrine arches, and elegant, beautifully colored, wooden structures that reflect Japanese culture in all its age and beauty.

The park grounds were originally part of Kaneiji Temple, which used to be one of the city's largest and wealthiest temples and a family temple of the ruling Tokugawa clan during the Edo Period. Kaneiji stood in the northeast of the capital to protect the city from evil, much like Enryakuji Temple in Kyoto

The pond represents Lake Biwako (in a reference to Kaneiji's model, the Enryakuji Temple of Kyoto, which overlooks Lake Biwako). On an island in the middle of the pond stands Bentendo, a temple hall dedicated to the goddess of Benten.

The name "Ameyoko" is a short form for "Ameya Yokocho" (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Alternatively, "Ame" also stands for "America", because a lot of American products used to be available when the street was the site of a black market in the years following World War 2. Today, products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food and spices are sold along Ameyoko. Opening hours and closing days depend on individual stores, but they typically open around 10:00 and close around 20:00. Many stores close on selected Wednesdays.

- Orange Street, Orange-dori in Japanese, is one of Asakusa’s many small shopping streets. Rickshaws often pass through here, their drivers pointing out popular stores and the handprints of artists and entertainers at the entrance of Asakusa Public Hall. The hall on the corner of Orange Street and Denbo-in-dori is a theater with a stage for Kabuki

It is one of Tokyo's most colorful and popular temples. The legend says that in the year 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, out of the Sumida River, and even though they put the statue back into the river, it always returned to them. Consequently, Sensoji was built nearby for the goddess of Kannon. The temple was completed in 645, making it Tokyo's oldest temple.

- Asakusa's Denboin Garden is one of them, and it's often referred to as a hidden gem or Tokyo's secret garden. Situated adjacent to the famous Senso-ji Temple, Denboin is special in that it's only open to the public for a limited window annually. This narrow window may seem disappointing, but once upon a time the garden was only accessible to nobility. Denboin Street Street turns into an art gallery with shop shutters depicting lively scenes from the Edo period (also the old name of Tokyo), which spans 1603-1868.

You can take long walks along the Sumidagawa River with a generous view of Tokyo Skytree. With many cherry trees, you'll find Sumida Park especially crowded during the cherry blossom festival season. Have a picnic, or take the waterbus to enjoy the cherry blossoms from the river. The sight becomes even more majestic as the trees are illuminated at night.

- One of Tokyo’s most famous skyline views can be seen from Asakusa. Standing on the banks of the Sumida River and looking east across Azumabashi Bridge you will notice that three buildings in particular stand out. One of these is Tokyo Skytree, which you cannot fail to notice simply because it is the tallest structure in Tokyo. But alongside that, you will also see a tall golden building, and beside it a smaller, squatter black building which acts as a pedestal for a gigantic golden squiggle. The tall golden building is Asahi Beer Tower. This is the 22-story headquarters for Asahi Breweries, and it is meant to resemble a well-poured glass of beer, with the white paneling at the top representing foam. The black building beside it is Asahi Beer Hall (also called Super Dry Hall), and the curious golden squiggle is the Asahi Flame.

- Owakudani (大涌谷, Ōwakudani) is the area around a crater created during the last eruption of Mount Hakone some 3000 years ago. Today, much of the area is an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers can be experienced. Additionally, Owakudani has good views of Mount Fuji on clear days. Eggs cooked in Owakudani's hot spring pools with their shells blackened by the sulfur are on sale at shops in the area, and eating one is said to prolong one's life by seven years. A short walking trail leads from the ropeway station into the volcanic zone to a number of steam vents and bubbling pools. The walk takes around 30 minutes in total. Admission to the trail requires advance reservations and costs 500 yen.

- Amasake Tea House 1 of 1 7:00 - 17:30 http://www.amasake-chaya.jp/ Hakone Amasake Chaya is a charming thatched-roof teahouse famous for two products. The first is amasake–which at this teahouse is a sweet, healthy rice beverage made according to a recipe unchanged for over four centuries. The second is mochi, a type of rice cake with a dense, sticky texture. Cooked rice is freshly pounded every morning to make Hakone Amasake Chaya's mochi. The glutinous mochi cakes, some sweet and some savory, are then grilled over charcoal before being served. Hakone Amasake Chaya Teahouse is a great place to stop in for a rest as you walk the ancient Tokaido Road, one of the five oldest highways in Japan. The teahouse has an open fireplace going when the weather is chilly. Amasake and mochi are available in the shop, and both make excellent souvenirs.

Kodaiji belongs to the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Its main buildings were constructed in the lavish style of the era of Japan's unification with the financial support of Hideyoshi's successor Tokugawa Ieyasu. - Visit very early or late afternoon No closed days, Always Open, Free. The hike to the summit of the mountain and back takes about 2-3 hours, however, visitors are free to walk just as far as they wish before turning back. Along the way, there are multiple smaller shrines & miniature torii gates that were donated by visitors with smaller budgets. There are also a few restaurants along the way, which offer locally themed dishes such as Inari Sushi and Kitsune Udon ("Fox Udon"), both featuring pieces of aburaage (fried tofu), said to be a favorite food of foxes. After about a 30-45 minute ascent and a gradual decrease in the density of torii gates, visitors will reach the Yotsutsuji intersection roughly half way up the mountain, where some nice views over Kyoto can be enjoyed, and the trail splits into a circular route to the summit. Many hikers only venture as far as here, as the trails do not offer much variation beyond this point and the gate density decreases further.

- https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3908.html Kinkakuji (金閣寺, Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and according to his will it became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect after his death in 1408. Kinkakuji was the inspiration for the similarly named Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion), built by Yoshimitsu's grandson, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, on the other side of the city a few decades later. Kinkakuji is an impressive structure built overlooking a large pond, and is the only building left of Yoshimitsu's former retirement complex. It has burned down numerous times throughout its history including twice during the Onin War, a civil war that destroyed much of Kyoto; and once again more recently in 1950 when it was set on fire by a fanatic monk. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955.

- Food & Bars, 17:00 - 23:00 Pontocho (先斗町, Pontochō) is one of Kyoto's most atmospheric dining areas. It is a narrow alley running from Shijo-dori to Sanjo-dori, one block west of Kamogawa River. The alley is packed with restaurants on both sides offering a wide range of dining options from inexpensive yakitori to traditional and modern Kyoto cuisine, foreign cuisine and highly exclusive establishments that require the right connections and a fat wallet. Most of the restaurants along the eastern side of the alley overlook Kamogawa River. From May to September, many of them build temporary platforms over the flowing water where patrons can dine out in the open air. Known as kawayuka, this type of dining was developed as a way to beat the summer heat and is a great way to try some traditional Kyoto cuisine while taking in the cooling effects of the flowing water and the lively summer atmosphere.

The temple was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples of Japan and grew so powerful that the capital was moved away from Nara in 784 in order to lower the temple's influence on government affairs. Until recently, Todaiji's main hall, the Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall), held the record as the world's largest wooden building, despite the fact that the present reconstruction of 1692 is only two thirds of the original temple hall's size. The massive building houses one of Japan's largest bronze statues of Buddha (Daibutsu). The 15 meters tall, seated Buddha represents Vairocana and is flanked by two Bodhisattvas.

It was established at the same time as the capital and is dedicated to the deity responsible for the protection of the city. Kasuga Taisha was also the tutelary shrine of the Fujiwara, Japan's most powerful family clan during most of the Nara and Heian Periods. Like the Ise Shrines, Kasuga Taisha had been periodically rebuilt every 20 years for many centuries. In the case of Kasuga Taisha, however, the custom was discontinued at the end of the Edo Period. Beyond the shrine's offering hall, which can be visited free of charge, there is a paid inner area which provides a closer view of the shrine's inner buildings. Furthest in is the main sanctuary, containing multiple shrine buildings that display the distinctive Kasuga style of shrine architecture, characterized by a sloping roof extending over the front of the building.
