- (Provided by service)Early every Sunday morning, Japan’s largest morning market springs up on the quay along the usually unoccupied Tatehana Fishing Harbor. Stretching 800 meters along the harbor, the market has not only exceptionally fresh seafood and vegetables but also shops selling ready-made food, restaurants, and variety shops, a total of 300 shops in all. About 10,000 people shop there each week, and during the O-Bon period and in holiday periods, it is so crowded that one can hardly walk. At times, people costumed as Ikadon, the unofficial local mascot of Tatehana Ganpeki Morning Market, wander among the crowd, handing out name cards and candy.

There are many ""must-see's"" in the area, including the Ashura Rapids, which are one of the Oirase Stream's best-known sights, and Choshi-otaki Waterfall, one of the most imposing waterfalls in the gorge. The shaden, comprised of the honden (or inner sanctuary), ainoma (which is also called ishinoma-zukuri) passageway, and haiden (or hall of worship) was designated as a National Treasure in 1952 for being the only remaining structure of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Worshippers deeply believe that the deity enshrined here wards off evil and calamities and invites good luck, as well as helps to gain victory or have easy childbirth. It is known for its Matsutaki Matsuri festival, the largest New Year’s event in all of Japan. New Year’s decorations and amulets are burned and the event is also called Dondo-yaki because of the intensity of the fire. The shrine is also famous for its “Hadaka Mairi” when half-naked worshippers form a procession to the shrine in the winter. Visitors can access the shrine by taking a bus that leaves from in front of Sendai Station, getting off at the Osaki Hachimangu-Mae stop …

Normally called “Yamadera”, it was opened by Ennin in 860 by decree of Emperor Seiwa. Currently, it is designated a Zao Quasi-National Park, with 1,090,000 square meters green lot with about 30 towers—the most historic holy mountain in the Tohoku region. A famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho wrote “Shizukasa ya iwa ni shimiiru semi no koe (Such stillness / The cries of the cicadas / Sink into the rocks)” here. Its remnants remain as “semi-zuka,” and many poets like Mokichi Saito have poems inscribed here.

The area is also famous for moon viewing parties, and there are countless accounts in books of the moonlight scenery. Other island cruises using medium-sized and small-boats (for groups of at least 15 passengers and at least 12 passengers respectively) are also available; because these boats have a shallower draught than the larger Nio-maru, they are able to follow different routes, giving passengers a closer look at the Matsushima Islands.

The fall leaves here are a famous sight, and this is designated one of Miyagi Prefecture’s top sights. There’s a maintained walking trail stretching about 2.5 kilometers along the river, taking about an hour to walk, and offering a gorgeous view of not only the forest but also rock formations created by the river’s erosion. The Narukokyo Resthouse in particular offers a stunning view of the Obukazawa Bridge contrasted against the leaves.
