This noodle shop is located about 10 minutes on foot from JR Sakaide Station. It is only open for one hour from 11:30 to 12:30 when visitors will be able to try their delicious udon (it is possible to get served if queuing at 12:30). The udon noodles, made by skilled noodle makers using the finest flour and seawater salt from the Seto Inland Sea has won the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Prize and the Kagawa Prefecture Governor Prize many times. Hot, warm, cold or kamatama udon (kama-age udon with egg) can be ordered as can the size but the broth and condiments, which you can find at the table, are all self service. Souvenirs are sold from 9:00 to 17 :00.

This famous hand-made udon noodle restaurant located in Utazu-cho, Ayauta County in Kagawa Prefecture has been featured in many TV programs and travel magazines. It has many fans who come from in and outside the prefecture and it is known for having long queues. Based on the belief that udon must be made by treading with the feet over and over, the noodles, of which the restaurant is proud and created with just the right amount of treading, are superb with their gloss, flexibility and strong firmness. The flagship dish is Hiyaten Oroshi, a generously-portioned chilled udon bowl topped with two giant tempura prawns. It also sells udon to take home with you.

An udon noodle restaurant which originally opened as a cheap diner in 1948. Today, the establishment offers a menu which has been refined down to the smallest details over a 60 year span, from the choice ingredients to the secret recipe seasonings. The restaurant is famous for its niku udon noodles served which thinly sliced beef - it's so popular, the establishment goes through 60 kilograms of beef a day. The niku bukkake udon noodles are equally popular. The inari sushi from the side dish menu is also highly regarded.

You’ll find this longstanding udon shop in Hanzan Town, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. It became famous for its self-service system in which customers pick their own green onions from the field and slicing them themselves. Nowadays, sliced green onions are included in the toppings corner. The udon is known for its supple and springy texture and traditional taste, which has remained unchanged for three generations. There’s “kama-tama udon” (udon with raw egg) and “kake-udon” served in a light broth. The soup stock and toppings are self-service.

You’ll find this popular udon shop near the Museo Marugame Hirai (Marugame Hirai Museum) in Doki Town, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. The noodle recipe was passed down from parent to child, and everything is done by hand, from the kneading of the dough to the stretching, cutting, and boiling. The udon freshly lifted from the pot is a delicacy with a nice, soft surface and a very springy texture. In addition to the “kama-tama udon,” there’s also cold udon and tsukemen noodles similar to zaru-style noodles. There’s only counter seating available, and the soup stock and seasonings are all self-service. The restaurant closes once the noodle supply runs out.

  • Shiromineji Temple
    Travel / Tourism
    Kagawa Sakaide-shi Omicho 2635
Approximately 20 minutes by car via Sakaide Kita Interchange, Takamatsu-danshi Interchange. This old temple sits on the hillside of Mt. Shiromine in Goshikidai—holy mount of Kagawa Prefecture. It is the 81st temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage, and its primary image is Senju Kannon, with protector gods from Eto zodiac venerated in their own respective halls. It is adjacent to the only Imperial mausoleum in Shikoku—Mt. Shiromine—so the Shiromine Daigongen (Sagamibo), one of Japan’s 8 Tengus, is also adored here. On the main path, you can enjoy the grand views of Seto and the Chigo-no-taki Waterfall—the tallest in the prefecture. Most of the buildings are Important Cultural Properties, and with cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, and colored leaves in fall, there is always something to see here.

This self-service udon restaurant is located in Iino Town, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. The popular, traditionally handmade noodles are produced without machines and cut by hand. The simple ingredients lead to some crimping and twisting, which produces stretchy, springy noodles that go down well. The simple “kake-udon” and “bukkake-udon” features the smell of small dried sardines emanating from the broth, and the “Sanuki mochi pork series” and seasonal options are popular as well.

Teuchi Udon Hayuka is a restaurant specializing in Sanuki Udon noodles. This is a self-service restaurant; after diners have ordered their Udon noodles, they add the desired toppings themselves. Teuchi Udon Hayuka is renowned for its thick, full-bodied, firm-textured noodles. The menu includes Kake Udon (traditional style Udon noodles in a simple broth), Zaru Udon (Udon noodles served on a bamboo tray), and Bukkake Udon (chilled Udon noodles served with a soy sauce based broth); diners can choose between two types of Bukkake Udon, one served with a mild-tasting broth and the other with a more strongly-flavored broth. The range of toppings available includes tempura, and also home-made roast pork, which is highly recommended.

This artificial lake was made in 1964 by damming Dondoro-fuchi on the Aya River. It's been named one of the Top 100 New Sanuki Views. The Takamatsu Expressway's cable-stayed bridge is near the center of the lake, and there's an arch bridge that reflects clearly on the surface of the lake on sunny days. As artificial lakes tend to have few waves, it's also a venue for canoeing events.

Tamura Udon is located at the intersection of Prefectual Route 17 and 183 north of Takinomiya Tenmangu Shrine. It looks like a small private house but is actually a popular noodle shop and there can be long lines at peak times. Its most popular dish is plain kake udon. The homemade noodles using locally sourced flour are firm and fresh, and the locals love it too. You can choose your own toppings which include standards such as boiled egg or tempura and unexpected items such as konbu seaweed tempura.

Kiyomizuya, a tea house on a mountain pass, has been operating for over 200 years. They craft their hand-made tokoroten jelly noodles with 100% domestic tengusa seaweed without additives or artificial colors to deliver its traditional flavor. Some of their popular varieties include kuzumochi style, Naniwa brown sugar syrup style, and their soy sauce and vinegar style tokoroten, a local favorite.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
