"This roadside station is near Seto Ohashi Bridge in Seto Ohashi Memorial Park which bills itself as a ""Bridge Land of Water, Greenery, and Sun."" Its waterfront, large lawn area, and playscape make it popular with parents and kids alike. The Seto Ohashi Memorial Hall provides an accessible introduction to the history of bridge's construction, telling the whole story through images and moving models. They also sell items like Seto-ohashi postcards and bridge building crafts."

It is a nice park with beautiful view. Not much people and you can have a nice and romantics walk with your boy/girl friend and take a good rest. We also enjoyed the cake set in the lounge of the...

MIMOCA (Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art) is an art museum in Marugame City. The museum was established to celebrate the artistic career of Genichiro Inokuma, an artist who grew up in the Marugame area and who later became a leading figure in international art circles, as well as to help reinvigorate culture and the arts in the Marugama region. MIMOCA’s location was chosen to make it easily accessible from the nearby railway station, giving it a more convenient location than more or less any other museum of its kind in Japan. The permanent exhibitions showcase the roughly 20,000 artworks that have been donated to the museum; in addition, several special exhibitions are held every year. The museum café has won acclaim for its “limited-edition” desserts, which are changed frequently to accompany MIMOCA’s special exhibitions.

The museum is 2min from JR Marugame Station. The building is beautiful and contemporary. Inside is spacious and many exhibits on each floor. It was interesting to know that Mr. Inokumas art changed...

This temple is 79th of the 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It is said to have been founded by Gyogi Bosatsu then revived by Kobo Daishi. As a miracle was performed at the time, it is said to have flourished for a long time. Its ingo temple title was Shoko-in but as the mausoleum for the Emperor Sutoku, famous for having turned in to a vengeful spirit, was built and memorial services were held here, the name was changed to Tennoji (The Emperor’s Temple). It is famous for its rare design that looks like the three gates are joined together.

Tennoji Temple shares its grounds with a Shinto shrine, so it is a kind of two-in-one for visitors coming to check out this very lovely site. History says that this is the site where the body of...

This 108-meter-tall tower is in Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture, and offers a rotating observation platform for a 360 degree panorama view. The clockwise rotating cabin completes a rotation every two minutes, and has a view of sights like the Seto-ohashi Bridge, the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, Goshikidai plateau, and more. There is a reservation-only restaurant in the tower, and a souvenir center selling Sanuki udon, olive products, and other local specialties.

My wife is from nearby Sakaide. This was a bit of nice discovery. It is not clear why it is not more popular. The view is incredible and is worth the 7 dollars to go up. It gives you a 360 degree...

Nakazu Banshoen was created in 1688 by the second Marugame feudal lord Kyogoku Takatoyo as part of his Nakatsu estate. The strolling garden has a pond side main structure and a tea room with a great view from the mezzanine floor stretching from the grounds to the sea. We also recommend the Kaifutei restaurant where you can dine in a relaxed atmosphere while gazing at the beautiful scenery of this Japanese garden.

There is a small museum in this garden. This was made in 1688 and over 1500 pine trees and many kinds of flowers. There is also a nice restaurant and you can enjoy Japanese foods.

The Gosho-ji Temple is the 78th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. Unusually for the temples included in the Pilgrimage, the Gosho-ji Temple belongs to the Ji-shu school of Buddhism. It was originally founded in 725 by the bodhisattva Gyoki as a temple dedicated to Amida Nyorai (the Amitabha Buddha). Subsequently, Kobo Daishi visited the site, carved a statue of himself, and built a monastery. The wooden statue, which came to be known as Yakuyoke Udatsu Daishi, attracted larger numbers of worshippers for many years. Subsequently, many famous monks—including Rigen Daishi and Keishin Sozu—visited the Temple to meditate. In 1288, Ippen Shonin (the founder of the Ji-shu school of Buddhism) visited the Gosho-ji Temple, and established a hall for Odori-nenbutsu (a form of Buddhist incantation that involves dancing, drumming and chanting). As a result, the Gosho-ji Temple became a temple where both the Shin-shu and Ji-shu schools of Buddhism were practiced.

A very good temple to visit if you want to see one that is not so much on the tourist radar. This is one of the temples on the pilgrimage which is truly inspiring to visit. A bit of a hike up the...

Marugame Castle is a flatland-mountain castle built in Kameyama at a height of approximately 66 meters. It is also called Kameyama Castle. This castle has won fame as a fine stone walled castle; various methods of stacking stones can be seen in this castle such as using stone worked on by a mason which is stacked up and implanted with Japanese clover, stacking natural stone which has been joined together and stacking the unworked surface of quarried stones. The castle tower is enshrined by a stone wall and is said to be the highest in Japan, which is one of the castle towers out of the 12 remaining castle towers in existence and even now conveys a characteristic beauty of form which is harmonized with nature. Seto-ohashi Bridge is one of the largest scale bridges in the world. In the commemorative Hall and Exhibition Space located in the Seto Ohashi Memorial Park, the techniques and construction of the bridge from beginning to end are showcased using images and models. The bridge has a depth of 50 meters below sea, a height of 200 meters and span of 9.4 kilometers. Don’t miss the bridge theater where you can enjoy the whole picture of the Seto-ohashi Bridge in high-definition. Audio guide is available in English, Chinese, and Korean.

The park plays host to a whole range of fun things to do including 22 rides and attractions, parades and 3D projection mapping shows. The Gokko Town area where visitors can have a go at 19 types of jobs, and the Oriental Trip where visitors can explore reproductions of famous sights in Asia and seasonal flowers are also popular. The Uchiwa no Minato Museum (POLCA) is a museum dedicated to the history of Marugame uchiwa (traditional paper fans). During the Edo period, it became customary to buy Marugame paper fans as souvenirs of a pilgrimage to the Kotohira Shrine, and fan-making became an important local industry in Marugame. The making of Marugame uchiwa fans has been designated a National Traditional Craft. The exhibits in POLCA include examples of different types of Marugame uchiwa fan dating from the Edo period to the present day, as well as the main regional fan styles from other parts of Japan, and mannequins showing the fan-making process, etc. There is also a demonstration area where visitors can see traditional fan-making techniques being demonstrated. POLCA is located around 15 minutes’ walk from JR Marugame Station.

Making fans was so enjoyable. We have seen many wonderful temples, gardens and castles and even been to Disney Tokyo. I have to say that for some reason this was one of the most memorable...

It's said the shrine grounds are built on the site. The Nembutsu dances that take place annually on the grounds have been designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Yamagoe Udon is an udon noodle restaurant founded in 1941 in Ayagawa Town, Ayauta County, Kagawa Prefecture, famous as the home of kamatama udon. Even during the week people are often waiting to get a table at this sought after restaurant. Kamatama udon was conceived when a regular customer came into the restaurant with an egg and ate it after mixing it with some hot udon noodles straight from the pot. Many people come for this great tasting dish of udon noodles made with the famous local waters, egg and specially made stock and soy sauce mixture all brought together in perfect harmony. The kamatamayama which is the kamatama udon topped with yam, is also popular. They also have a wide variety of toppings including tempura.

I went there by udon bus tour. It was around 10am in the morning but already lots of people were eating udon. Kamata udon was really taste. Fried mashed potato was also great.

This aviation park is located a 30-minute drive from Takamatsu Airport. Jet aircraft and helicopters are displayed on its expansive grounds. From the park’s 360 degree, panoramic observatory, visitors can take in a view of the Sanuki Plain, Marugame Port, and distant Shido Bay. The runways of Takamatsu Airport are also visible below, and visitors can even watch as aircraft pass directly overhead after having just taken off from the airport. A Shinto shrine dedicated to aircraft is located in the back of the park, and many students about to take their high school or college entrance exam famously come here to pray that they will not “fall” (fail). The park also has a playground with a jungle gym and Tarzan rope, and on weekends the grounds bustle with families.

This is the only beach within Sakaide City. Shamijima Island has fine sand that covers its coastline. It is also called Manyo no Shima, as it is dotted with historic ruins, tombs, and literary monuments. This cozy beach has a sense of privacy, but is equipped with showers and toilets in the Nishinohamanoie beach house. This beach house, formerly used for the Seto Island Sea International Arts festivals, is divided into three sections. It now offers Shamijima oden and light meals. This beach is settled directly at the foot of the Seto Ohashi bridge. It has been selected as one of Selection of Best 100 Beach because of the magnificent view of nature against the backdrop of the modern beauty of the bridge, and the clear clean water.

This doll museum is about an eight-minute walk from the Sakaide Station. The museum is operated and supported by the Kamada Soy Sauce Group, known for its dashi-shoyu. On display in this European style building, within the Kamada Shoyu main factory grounds are 23 differing fantastical ball-in-joint wooden dolls that the artist Simon Yotsuya created. In the Tan Ou Sou gallery, the building itself being a registered Tangible Cultural Property, one can find dolls tucked away in every possible location like the vault, the restroom, and the closets. The Ozawa Tsuyoshi Sanuki Museum of Soy Sauce Art, which displays brush paintings using soy sauce as a medium, and the Kamada Foundation Museum, which preserves and displays historical manuscripts and research works, both adjoin this museum. Many visitors tour all three museums together.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
