    Yamaguchi Hikari-shi Tsukari 2250-1
A museum displaying personal items of Japan's first Prime Minister, Hirobumi Ito. You can learn about Japan from the end of the Edo period to the end of the Meiji period in a building featuring Meiji brick construction. The steel-framed, one-story structure with a floor area of 534.36 square meters is located between Hirobumi Ito's birthplace and former residence, providing a symbolic connection between his childhood and later life. The exhibition room displays his uniform, the first 1,000 yen note with his portrait (issued in 1963), and furniture that he used at his villa in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture.

    Yamaguchi Hikari-shi Murozumi 5-6-5
"A local museum established for the 50th anniversary of the municipality as one of its ""hometown creation"" projects. It consists of a main building and an annex restored by the Isobe family who owned a soy sauce shop under the name ""Isotami (later Isoya)"" from the Edo period to the mid-1950s. The Isobe Honke building is a unique merchant house structure colloquially called an unagi no nedoko (eel bed). The long two-story wooden building with narrow frontage recalls the prosperity of the port town of Murozumi. Exhibits on the kitamaebune ships that called at Murozumi during the Edo period, displays of equipment used for soy sauce brewing, and other displays let you learn about the lifestyles and culture of those days."

Yamaguchi Areas

around-area-map

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
