    This yokan (sweet bean jelly) specialty shop is in Kushimoto Town, Higashimuro County, Wakayama Prefecture. It opened in 1900 and operated over four generations before closing down once. The current owner used recipes he found in his grandfather’s Buddhist altar to recreate the original taste. The shop’s flagship product is the “hon-neri yokan,” of which only 200 can be produced daily. Each one is carefully made using Hokkaido azuki beans and agar from Osaka. The shop was recently awarded first place at the Monde Selection competition. The surface is crispy and has a unique dry texture.

    This Japanese confectionery store is located a little to the southwest along National Route 42, after exiting JR Kushimoto Station. The long-established store was founded in 1893, and in a time when manju buns were considered sweets, it pursued the creation of a light, unsweetened bun, which is now a specialty product, Usukawa Manju. Its main characteristic is the special bean paste which is made from scratch to be delicious while also not being too sweet. In addition to Usukawa Manju, the store also has Imoimo and Hamasodachi, as well as Rosetsu Monaka, which have been recognized by Premier Wakayama.

    国道沿いの本店に寄って、うすかわ饅頭を買いました。店の前の駐車場に2、3台停められます。6個入り。甘くないこし餡で何個でも食べられますが、食べたことがない味ではありません。あっさりしたこし餡です。宿泊した翌日に、朝9時前に店の前を通過した時、開店していたので朝、お土産として買えました。

    This store is located approximately a 10-minute drive from JR Kushimoto Station. It is a bakery and cafe situated in the western part of Kii-Oshima Island, and it is possible to ask the driver of the bus headed to Oshima Port and Kashinozaki Lighthouse to make a stop in front of the store. It sells bread made from domestically produced wheat and organic ingredients, making it a popular place to eat for locals as well as tourists. Another of the store's attractive features is that customers can enjoy their meals relaxing in the wooden-built store which was inspired by the shade of trees. The cafe menu also includes pizza, croque monsieur and cake sets, among others.

    Nice bakery, lots of different bread. Seems like the cafe is not operating...? Only take out. Nice location and nice little house. Seems quite busy, people were lining outside. Not cheap, but...

    妻と一緒に入店しましたが、あれやこれや食事の最中にずっと話しかけてくる。無視しても、自分のことだけ考えて、話してくる。最低の店です。料理も大雑多で、対して美味しくない。もちろん安くもない。ガストやコンビニの方が、よっぽどマシでした。

    天丼とうどんのセットを食べました。 地元の人たちで賑わっていて、店員さんたちも親切でよかったです。 寒い時期にあったまりました。
