This is a Western settler’s home planned and built by British doctor Fudersack. It is a typical colonial construction with beautiful veranda, and inside the furnishings are elegant items from the 17th to 19th Century. There is also a room which is a reconstruction of the dwellings of famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. The beautiful English garden is a sight to behold, as is the reconstruction of London’s Baker Street underground station. At night the place becomes an English pub where alcohol of the world can be enjoyed. The nearest station is Shin-Kobe Station.

I’ve been a few times to The English House and it has always been delightful. This was my first time ordering food from there (lockdown rules!) and it was simply superb! All the food travelled...

Serving as a symbol of the port town of Kobe, this active customs office, located a 15-minute walk south of JR Sannomiya Station, has been used to shoot movies and television dramas. The office' public relations museum contains informational panels presenting the history and roll of the customs office, as well as exhibits on smuggling methods, knockoff goods, and items subject to the CITES treaty. Visitors can also try their hand at guessing which of two items is the real deal and which is the knockoff. During the Open Customs event held each year in November, the office's former reception room for nobility, normally kept closed, is made open to the public, as well as the office's rooftop and other areas.

This is a western-style building relocated in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, originally built in the old foreign settlement as an apartment catering to foreigners in 1908. It is a unique building where two Western-style buildings are symmetrically connected, and because of this became known as the “Western row house”. The interior is unified with French furnishings and artworks, and on display are Art Nouveau works by Emile Galle, the Dome brothers as well as a painting by Chagall. A must see is an early era trunk of the popular “Louis Vuitton” brand.

This is a Western-style residence in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, built as the home of Mr. Sansen of the Taisho period. It is a stylish building of three Tudor-style spires, with a beautiful stained glass door. Inside is a great number of Eastern and Western artworks including sculptures, paintings by famous artists such as Rodin and Rembrandt, and the particularly wonderful wooden carvings of the Makonde people. The famous Saturn Chair makes the sitter’s dreams come true and has been featured on television.

    北野地区にある洋館の一つだが、内部は美術館のようになっている。東洋の仏像がいっぱいあったが、洋館とはちょっとミスマッチ。

This gable roof Western-style residence was built in the latter part of the Meiji period, and it is also referred to as the “old Furyuga house.” When the Port of Kobe was opened, this place served as a bustling members-only social club for foreign residents, and it has been reconstructed for modern visitors. There are many stately and luxurious furnishings that exude the former elegant atmosphere even now. Must-see sights include a fireplace used during the Bourbons reign and an old firewood-style kitchen, an antique organ, a musical score from the Renaissance Period, a 19th-century horse carriage, and more.

    北野地区にある洋館の一つ。外国人の社交場として賑わった当時を再現している。私は以前ヨーロッパに住んでいたので、この手の展示はあまり珍しくなかったが、初めて見る人には面白いと思う。

The Kaori no Ie Orandakan, which has been selected as one of Hyogo’s top 100 modern homes, is a two story hipped roofed wooden building of the mid-Taisho period and was used as a residence for the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for a long time until it was opened to the public in 1987 after I.S. Wolhin had lived there. The front yard is adorned with tulips typical of the Netherlands and flowers of every season. It is approximately 15 minutes on foot from JR Shin-Kobe Station. Located within the Kitano Ijinkan area.

    北野地区にある洋館の一つ。この辺りはいくつも洋館があるが、全部回ると入場料だけでも馬鹿にならないので、外から見るだけでパスした。あらかじめ下調べをして、興味のある所を選んで見学するといい。

Located in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, Uroko-no-ie was the first Ijinkan (former residences of early foreign settlers) building to be opened to the public and has been designated as a registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. It was built in the settlement as a leased house for foreigners in 1885, and was later moved to its current location. It is called “House of the Scales” because the outer walls are covered with natural slate making it look like fish scales. The building holds a collection of antique furniture which gives a sense of history, as well as works of art, including famous Meissen porcelain and Western paintings. The view from the third floor overlooking the city of Kobe is also a must see.

An office building standing on Kaigan-dori Street in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. The building was originally constructed to serve as the Kobe branch office for Mitsui & Co. in 1918. The modern stone building was completely destroyed by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The granite outer walls were salvaged and reused for the facade of a new skyscraper built on the same spot. Accordingly, today the building has a unique design consisting of a retro stone building style base from which rise a towering glass skyscraper. The structure is still used as an office building.

This is a Western-style residence originally built for US Consul General Hunter Sharp in 1903, located in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. The two-story, light-green wooden building has been designated as one of Japan’s Important Cultural Properties. It has an extravagant design reminiscent of its era, with highlights being the two differently-shaped overhanging windows and the staircase with ornaments. There is also a wonderful view from the veranda, allowing one to see all the way to the Port of Kobe.

Hyogo Areas

around-area-map

Hyogo prefecture stretches from the north coast to the south coast on the western end of the popular Kansai region, encompassing verdant mountains, urban beaches, and fantastic historical sights. The prefecture’s main attractions lie along the south coast at Kobe, the prefectural capital, a pretty harbor city best known for its production of the renowned Kobe beef, and Himeji, the home of Himeji Castle, one of the country’s most beautifully preserved feudal castles, perched magically atop a hill.
