  • A-Bomb Dome
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Pref. Hiroshimashinakaku Otemachi 1-10
An atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Just about 160 meters northwest of the bomb’s hypocenter was the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, which was built in 1915. The building was destroyed by the explosion’s blast and heat rays, and while the ceiling was burned, miraculously the center portion of the main building escaped destruction, and the round steel frame of the dome on the top that remained came to be called the “A-Bomb Dome.” It is a building to tell future generations about the tragedy of war and destruction, and is registered as a world heritage site as a symbol to appeal to the world for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the importance of enduring peace.

    Hiroshima Pref. Hiroshimashinakaku Nakajimachou 1-1
This building was constructed in 1929 by Osaka’s Taishoya Gofukuten (a kimono shop), and features a ferro-concrete construction, which was unusual at that time. Sales areas with show windows occupied the space from the first floor up to the third floor, customers were allowed to enter with their shoes on, and the rooftop offered a view of the city. The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in August of 1945, and as this building was only 170 meters from the bomb’s hypocenter, the roof was flattened, the interior was also destroyed and the entire structured burned down except for the basement. Somehow a prototype of the building was restored after the war and from 1982 it has been used as a rest house for the Peace Memorial Park.

Located right in the Peace Park there are washrooms as well as a tourist Info site. Upstairs there are also a couple of displays upstairs that was worthwhile visiting for free.

Hiroshima Pref. Fukuyamashi Tomochou Tomo 2
This is a temple which was considered to have been built by Kuya Shonin in the middle of the Heian period. The Taichoro Reception Hall was built in 1694 as the reception hall of Fukuzenji Temple, and it was used as a reception hall to host Korean envoys. As the building and related artifacts from the time of the envoy have been preserved, the hall was designated as a National Historic Site as the “historic ruins used for the Korean envoy on the grounds of Fukuzenji Temple” in 1994.

Tomonoura is not well known to people from Eastern Japan or foreign visitors, but its a very pretty town and worth visiting. The view from this temple is beyond expression. Literally, its a...

    Hiroshima Fukuyama-shi Kannabecho Kawakita 640-3
The Renjuku was a private school established in 1781 in the Edo period by Confucian scholar Kan Chazan in his homeland of Bingo Province (in what is now Kannabe-cho). Formally named the Kannabe Gakumonjo (“Kannabe School”), the school was attended by 20 students from around the country at any given time; late Edo period historian Rai San'yo is believed to have been one of its students. The lecture hall, dormitory, and Kan Chazan’s residence and library still stand on the grounds today, and, as one of only a few remaining examples of such schools in the region, it has been designated a National Special Historic Site.

    Travel / Tourism
Hiroshima Pref. Fukuyamashi Tomochou Tomo 606
The old merchant house building in Tomo Town, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is an important cultural property of the city. The building was originally used as a kimono shop and a ship chandler but now it is a merchant’s house typical of those in Tomo, open to the public only on the weekends and national holidays. The main building built towards the end of the Edo period has the standard town house layout with its shop front, middle room followed by the back room. The distinctive feature of this house is the way in which the storehouse, built during the Meiji period, encroaches on the main building in a circular fashion. Inside the house, trading tools and everyday items used in those are on display.

This old Japanese estate sprawls behind the majestic wooden Rantokaku Art Museum building. The estate was moved here at the end of the Edo period by Yamaji Kikoku, a wealthy farmer in what is now Numakuma-cho, Fukuyama City, and turned into a place for the study of Chinese classics which was visited by many scholars. Inside, the estate features many elaborate architectural touches. Of particular note is the Japanese-style room on the first floor with moveable walls, which is one of only a very few examples to survive into the present time; here visitors can take a break in between exploring the estate, sip on Matcha green tea, and gaze at the estate’s garden.

    Hiroshima Hatsukaichi-shi Miyajimacho 1-1
This stage is situated in front of the main purification hall of Itsukushima Shrine. The stage’s base is lacquered in black, while crimson-lacquered railings run around it, and it is counted as one of the three most beautiful traditional stages in Japan, alongside the Shitennoji Temple’s Ishibutai and the Sumiyoshi Taisha’s Ishibutai. The original stage was built in 1546 by Tanamori Fusaaki when he served as a priest at Itsukushima Shrine. The original was designed to be taken apart and set up as needed; in the early Edo period, the current permanent design came to be employed. Traditional bugaku music and dance performances, believed to have been introduced from the Shitennoji Temple in Osaka by military leader Taira no Kiyomori, are still performed using this stage today.
  • Kannabe Honjin
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Fukuyama-shi Kannabecho Kawakita 528
Kanabe-cho in what is now Fukuyama City was once a prosperous post-station town on the Shikoku Highway (San’yo Road) in the Edo period. Many samurai lords stayed here in this honjin stronghold when making the required journey to live in Edo every other year. Originally, the prosperous transportation center had two honjin, an eastern and a western one, but today only the western honjin still stands. The solemn stronghold is surrounded by a black-lacquered earthen wall, giving it an impressive air, and it looks virtually the same as it did in the Edo period. Conveying the history of the area from 250 years ago, the stronghold was designated an Important Cultural Property by Hiroshima Prefecture in 1969.

Hiroshima Areas

around-area-map

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
