Yachioyaza, one of Japan’s Important Cultural Properties, is a playhouse built in 1910. Since opening they have put on a variety of shows, but with the changing era the number of visitors fell and the place closed. However, thanks to the ardent fund-raising activities of groups both old and young, restoration took place over 30 years and it is now a working playhouse again. It is also possible to take a look behind the scenes of the theater, from the revolving stage to the theater basement.

Yachiyoza is one of the old Japanese theaters still in use. Actually it was a reconstruction and the actual building has only 20 years of history. But it was so finely reconstructed that we can now...

Koizumi Yakumo, also known as Lafcadio Hearn, was the famed author of tales based on Japanese legends such as Hoichi the Earless and The Snow Woman. The residence here was the first home he lived in in Japan when he came to Kumamoto as an English teacher for Daigo Junior and Senior High School (now Kumamoto University). It is said that Hearn penned Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan in this building. The residence was severely damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake and currently only a portion of the home and garden are open to the public (as of January 2017).

In a small park behind Tsuruya department store, there is a former residence of Koizumi Yakumo, a famous writer of Meiji. As I am interested in literature, the visit was quite meaningful. Natume...

The former residence of author Natsume Soseki is located next to the Janes Residence on the grounds of the Kumamoto Yogakko School. This is the third house that Soseki lived in while in Kumamoto, and it was moved from the former village of Oe to its current location. It is said to be the departure point for the journey described in his book Grass Pillow (Kusa-makura).

Gokanosho is a collective name for a region of five local settlements, and is approximately 60 minutes from the Matsuhashi or Hitoyoshi Interchange of the Kyushu Expressway. This region surrounded by the steep ravines of the Kyushu Central mountain range is said to have been established by the Heike clan after being defeated at the Battle of Danno-ura. Located here is the Heike no Sato, culture and history museum which tells of the settler’s folklore and lifestyles of that period. Also the Kureko Kodai Dance, a National Important Intangible Cultural Property, is performed annually within the Kureko shrine precincts commemorating their settlement on August 15, September 1, and November 3. This region is also an exquisite spot for enjoying autumnal foliage and fresh verdure.

"A teahouse built in 1688 by Matsui Naoyuki, the lord of Yatsushiro Castle. It was named after the beach in those days, with its view of the Yatsushiro Sea and Unzen over the dense pine forest. Also known as ""The Beach Teahouse,"" its design incorporates the magnificent sea and distant scenery. It's been designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty as it has an important example of an early Edo period feudal lord's garden. In early June, the large flowers of the park's roughly 5,000 Higo irises blooming together is a site to behold. The Matsui Bunko archives display important heirlooms of the Matsui family, including a hanging scroll with calligraphy related to Miyamoto Musashi and a hand carved wooden sword."

It is a garden of Matsui Family, the castle keeper of Yatsushiro Castle. Although quite powerful, they were not the same level as the feudal lord of Kumamoto. So the garden is also quite modest. In...

The Shiibara area is said to be where three descendants of Taira no Kiyotsune (defeated at the Battle of Dannoura by the Minamoto clan) settled down and ruled. The residence where one of them, Ogata Kishiro, is said to have lived in hiding has been restored and is now open to the public. The rare kabuto-zukuri gassho style structure was built about 300 years ago. A hidden second floor room provides a direct experience of the legend of the fugitive Taira clan. These days the house used for various events like formal tea parties and biwa lute concerts where the Tale of Heike is told to music.

    Kumamoto Amakusa-shi Funenoomachi
"The official name is the ""Gionbashi Fusekizo Kinenhi."" It's called Gion Bridge because of its location in front of Gion-jinja Shrine. The bridge's simple design features stone columns and triangular streamlined piers to aid the flow of water. Its multi-pier design is rarely found in Japan. 28.6 meters long and about 3.3 meters wide, it is one of the largest stone girder bridges in the country. The bridge was also the site of the largest battle of the Amakusa Shimabara Rebellion. As some of the stonework has fallen off, it is currently impassable."

Kumamoto lies in the center of Kyushu, a calm prefecture perfect for easy strolls around the historic center and lazy evenings in the natural hot springs at Kurokawa Onsen. For a slightly more strenuous activity, head to Mount Aso, whose surrounding hills offer hiking opportunities aplenty with views over the active volcano.
