This folk history museum sits in a corner of the Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village, a World Heritage site located in the mountains east from Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway's Gokayama Interchange via the Hietsukyo Gassho Scenic Route. It is notable for its two gassho-zukuri style buildings with straw-thatched roofs which were once a residence of the old Ozaki Family. The museum exhibits articles once used by villagers, as well as historical materials that convey the village's tradition of mutual aid. On the second floor, guests can get a close look at the unique framework and internal construction of gassho-zukuri buildings. The museum's second building, the Ainokura Traditional Industry Museum, contains historical materials about washi (Japanese paper) and saltpeter, two of Gokayama's traditional industries. Visitors at the museum can learn about the history of Japan through the wisdom and hardships of ancestors.

It was built in 1868 as a mansion for the Uchiyama family, a wealthy farming family called Etchu Masters of A Thousand Koku (a measure of wealth, land value for taxation purposes of Edo period).

Toyama Nakaniikawa-gun Tateyamamachi Ashikuraji Division Dodaira
A murodo is a hall where mountain ascetics stay and pray. This murodo located along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is said to be the oldest mountain hut in Japan. It was actually used as a base for climbing Mt. Tateyama, Mt. Tsurugi, and other mountains in the area as late as the 1980s. An archeological excavation conducted when the building was disassembled for repairs discovered evidence of its role as place of worship from around the 12th, confirming that it has been in use since the Kamakura Period. The current building is a reconstruction built in 1726 and has been designated as a National Important Cultural Asset. It was built using wood from the virgin forests of Bijodaira. How the wood was carried here is still wrapped in mystery.

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
