When the Kagoshima Spinning Mill was built in 1867 as Japan’s first Western-style spinning mill, this structure was built to house seven English engineers invited to provide guidance regarding the plant. The building is a rare extant example of early Meiji period Western-style architecture in Japan. The building was registered as a World Heritage site in 2015 under the collective “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining.”

  • Chiran Samurai Residence Garden
    Travel / Tourism
    Kagoshima Pref. Minamikyushushi Chiranchoukori 6198
Calling itself Satsuma’s Little Kyoto with stone walls and hedges that zig-zag along the main road, the area features a group of beautiful samurai residences that makes the whole town seem like a miniature garden. Within the spacious district are seven gardens, and although Mori Shigemitsu’s garden is in the style of chisen-shiki (a garden that features a path around a pond), all of the rest are of the Karesansui Dry Garden variety, in which instead of water, rocks and gravel are used to represent a landscape of mountains and water. The gardens bear the influence of Ryukyu (Okinawa) and Chinese garden culture, and have been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty.
  • Futatsuya Traditional House
    Travel / Tourism
    Kagoshima Pref. Minamikyushushi Chiranchoukori
A “futatsuya” is a traditional, southern Kyushu style of home architecture consisting of a main building called the “omote” and a separate, secondary “nakae” building used for cooking. In Chiran, an additional, smaller building was built between the two, resulting in a distinctive “L” shape called “Chiran style futatsuya.” Chiran style futatsuya are valuable examples of historic local architecture, and today there are only three such Chiran style futatsuya still standing—two in an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings and one in Minamikyushu City. Visitors to the area can also view a relocated and restored Chiran style futatsuya in the Chiran Samurai Residence garden.
  • Isson Tanaka's Final Residence
    Travel / Tourism
Kagoshima Amami-shi Naze Ariya Cho 38-3
This home was the final residence of the Nihonga painter Isson Tanaka, who moved to Amami Oshima Island after being charmed by the nature of these southern islands when he was 50 years old. The joy of living in this new home, which he purportedly considered to be like a palace compared to the previous home he had long rented, is said to have rejuvenated his creative urges. His paintings in this period are best characterized by his boldly composed and detailed depictions of the island's subtropical plants and fish. He continued to create paintings inspired by the nature of the Amami Islands until he passed away in obscurity at the age of 69 in 1977. The anniversary of his death is still marked by members of the community.
  • Furuichi Family Residence
    Travel / Tourism
Kagoshima Kumage-gun Nakatane Cho Sakai 3182
This building in the Honmura community in southern Nakatane Town was constructed in 1846 according to its munefuda (ridgepole tag). It was built by Furuichi Gensuke, a country samurai who at the time served in important positions such as shoya (village headman) and yokome (supervisor). The mid-sized residence, which features both tatami matted rooms and dirt floor rooms, is one of the oldest surviving buildings on Tanegashima Island. The home was designated as an Important Cultural Property in 1994 in recognition of the value of the historical scenery it forms together with the excellent surrounding environment.

    Kagoshima Izumi-shi Fumotocho 5-11
This samurai residence open to the public is the oldest building in the Izumi-Fumoto Samurai Residences, a national Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. The home still strongly retains the vestiges of when this area was a samurai community in the Edo period. It notably features an indoor archery range for practicing kyudo on rainy days as well as hidden rooms, secret passages, and other facilities intended for use if the home came under attack. Many people visit during the fall to see the bright red leaves on the outstretched branches of the large Japanese maple in the garden.
  • Takezoetei
    Travel / Tourism
    Kagoshima Izumi-shi Fumotocho 5-17
"This samurai residence, a part of the Izumi-Fumoto Samurai Residences, is located at the intersection of Tatebaba Street and Kariyababa Street. Members of the Takezoe family served in a variety of important positions such as kumigashira and atsukai after relocating their residence from Komenotsu to Izumi-Fumoto in 1637. The home and its garden are more modest than the other samurai residences in Izumi-Fumoto because its close location to the border between Satsuma Province and Higo Province, but it dictated a stronger focus on strategic facilities. Takezoetei even served as a filming location for the Taiga Drama (the NHK's annual series of historical dramas) ""Atsuhime"" The home's convenient location a five-minute drive from JR Izumi Station and the fact that guides are always on duty make it an easy choice as a sightseeing destination."
  • Yamatohama Traditional Storehouses
    Travel / Tourism
Kagoshima Oshima-gun Yamatoson Yamato Hama 119
Located about a two-minute walk from Yamato Village Hall, this is a group of high-floor warehouses in Yamatohama. Originally, it was built on the outskirts of the village as a warehouse to store cereals and to protect it from fire, these warehouses on Amami Oshima Island are said to have an unusual type of architecture. The architectural style that does not use a single nail is the oldest, and the thatched part of the buildings are used for storage. They use a method to prevent mice from entering them, and now five buildings remain. The buildings are registered as prefecture-designated tangible cultural properties.

Kagoshima Areas

around-area-map

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
