This clock tower is in the Toyooka City Izushi Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings in Izushi-cho, Toyooka City. Originally it was built as a drum tower in 1871 during the period when they were used to announce the time. It was converted in 1881 when a large clock was donated. It's been restored three times and is now a symbol of the town.

This is a Western settler’s home planned and built by British doctor Fudersack. It is a typical colonial construction with beautiful veranda, and inside the furnishings are elegant items from the 17th to 19th Century. There is also a room which is a reconstruction of the dwellings of famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. The beautiful English garden is a sight to behold, as is the reconstruction of London’s Baker Street underground station. At night the place becomes an English pub where alcohol of the world can be enjoyed. The nearest station is Shin-Kobe Station.

I’ve been a few times to The English House and it has always been delightful. This was my first time ordering food from there (lockdown rules!) and it was simply superb! All the food travelled...

Serving as a symbol of the port town of Kobe, this active customs office, located a 15-minute walk south of JR Sannomiya Station, has been used to shoot movies and television dramas. The office' public relations museum contains informational panels presenting the history and roll of the customs office, as well as exhibits on smuggling methods, knockoff goods, and items subject to the CITES treaty. Visitors can also try their hand at guessing which of two items is the real deal and which is the knockoff. During the Open Customs event held each year in November, the office's former reception room for nobility, normally kept closed, is made open to the public, as well as the office's rooftop and other areas.

This is a western-style building relocated in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, originally built in the old foreign settlement as an apartment catering to foreigners in 1908. It is a unique building where two Western-style buildings are symmetrically connected, and because of this became known as the “Western row house”. The interior is unified with French furnishings and artworks, and on display are Art Nouveau works by Emile Galle, the Dome brothers as well as a painting by Chagall. A must see is an early era trunk of the popular “Louis Vuitton” brand.

This is a Western-style residence in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, built as the home of Mr. Sansen of the Taisho period. It is a stylish building of three Tudor-style spires, with a beautiful stained glass door. Inside is a great number of Eastern and Western artworks including sculptures, paintings by famous artists such as Rodin and Rembrandt, and the particularly wonderful wooden carvings of the Makonde people. The famous Saturn Chair makes the sitter’s dreams come true and has been featured on television.

This gable roof Western-style residence was built in the latter part of the Meiji period, and it is also referred to as the “old Furyuga house.” When the Port of Kobe was opened, this place served as a bustling members-only social club for foreign residents, and it has been reconstructed for modern visitors. There are many stately and luxurious furnishings that exude the former elegant atmosphere even now. Must-see sights include a fireplace used during the Bourbons reign and an old firewood-style kitchen, an antique organ, a musical score from the Renaissance Period, a 19th-century horse carriage, and more.

    北野地区にある洋館の一つ。外国人の社交場として賑わった当時を再現している。私は以前ヨーロッパに住んでいたので、この手の展示はあまり珍しくなかったが、初めて見る人には面白いと思う。

"A historic structure located in Tatsuno Park. Comprised of three buildings-a teahouse, hermitage, and cool summer lodge, the site's name, which means ""Assembled Distant Arbor,"" is derived from the picturesque scenery viewable from the front garden. From here visitors can get a sweeping view of Awaji Island and the other islands floating in the Seto Inland Sea. The place is also a renowned destination for fall foliage viewing. The teahouse which was originally given by Emperor Komei to Wakisaka Yasuori, lord of Tatsuno Domain was moved here as a fudo hall. The building is built in the traditional tea arbor style and blends in harmoniously with the nearby pond shaped like the cursive style of writing Chinese character for heart and garden. Monuments and stones inscribed with haiku stand on the bank of the pond. Tea ceremonies are also sometimes held here."

    龍野公園内にある建物です。茶室の聚遠亭の他、江戸時代の藩主の別邸の御涼所があります。また、日本庭園も整備されていて、秋には紅葉がきれいです。

Hyogo Kobe-shi Nada-ku Aotanicho 1-1-4 Oji Dobutsuen Uchi
This western-style building decorated with cresting and scrollwork building is one of the largest surviving Kobe Ijinkan (foreigner residences). It is situated in a corner of the Kobe Oji Zoo, which exhibits 130 species of animal including giant pandas and koalas. The building, which features a stone foundation and combed mortar exterior walls, was relocated from its original location in Kitano-cho in 1963. Although the exact year of its construction is unknown, it is said that a German named A. Greppi commissioned an English engineer with its construction in 1889. The home, which still conveys how extravagant it must have appeared at the time, can be toured free of charge (although there is a charge for admission to the zoo).

    Hyogo Ako-shi Sakoshi 1334
This historic site is located about a 15-minute drive east from the Ako Interchange on the Sanyo Expressway. The residence, which once served as a meeting place, sits at the bottom of the central avenue connecting Sakoshi Port and Chikusa River. Kankaian, the small lounge on the second floor, was for the exclusive use of the lord of the Ako Domain. The beautiful Sakoshi Port can be seen through the window of the room, which is slightly lower than the rest of the second floor. The building was constructed in 1831-1832 to serve as a place to meet to discuss governance, commerce, and other administrative affairs. The building, which also served a teahouse for the Ako Domain until the dawn of the Meiji Period, was designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Ako City in 1992.

"This residence was where the literary master Junichiro Tanizaki lived for seven years from 1936-1943. The attached Tanizaki Library features a collection of books, reference literature, and other items. The home, where he Tanizaki lived with his wife Matsuko and her younger sisters, inspired the setting of his masterpiece ""The Makioka Sisters"" (Sasameyuki). The world of the novel, which realistically depicted life in the home, will vividly come to life as you set foot inside. The attached library, which was built on the 20th anniversary of the home's relocation, exhibits works written in Tanizaki's own hand."

The Kaori no Ie Orandakan, which has been selected as one of Hyogo’s top 100 modern homes, is a two story hipped roofed wooden building of the mid-Taisho period and was used as a residence for the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for a long time until it was opened to the public in 1987 after I.S. Located in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, Uroko-no-ie was the first Ijinkan (former residences of early foreign settlers) building to be opened to the public and has been designated as a registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. It was built in the settlement as a leased house for foreigners in 1885, and was later moved to its current location. It is called “House of the Scales” because the outer walls are covered with natural slate making it look like fish scales. The building holds a collection of antique furniture which gives a sense of history, as well as works of art, including famous Meissen porcelain and Western paintings. The view from the third floor overlooking the city of Kobe is also a must see.

"This residence, also known as the Hakogi Sennenya House, was the home of a powerful family in the Muromachi period. Traditionally believed to have been constructed during between 806 and 810, the home is said to be the oldest surviving private house in Japan. Due to the construction of Donto Dam in 1977, the home relocated from its original location slightly northwest of its current location. At the time of the survey conducted before the home was dismantled, it had a floor plan called ""Seikei Mutsumadori"" that is comprised of six rooms and an earth-floored area. However, it was later separated into two buildings sometime in the late Edo period. These two buildings were transferred to the new location and reconstructed. The museum located inside the storehouse features exhibits including agricultural implements used at the time as well as a model of the home."
