    Hyougo Pref. Toyokashi Akaishi
"A National Natural Monument-designated cave located in Genbudo Park along Prefectural Route 548 in Akaishi, Toyooka City. The cave is notable for the narrow, regular ridges from which it is formed, created when magma flowing from a volcano which erupted 1.6 million years ago cooled. Formed of innumerable lines of basalt, the cave's name is derived from the Japanese word for basalt-""genbugan."" The nearby Genbudo Museum provides information about the cave and also contains mineral and fossil exhibits."
  • Kanegasaka Tunnel

    Hyogo Sasayama-shi Oire
Kanegasaka Pass connecting Tamba City and Sasayama City was famous in ancient times for its dangerousness. In actuality, three separate tunnels have been built at the pass to ease movement between the two cities: the Meiji tunnel, started in 1880; the Showa tunnel, started in 1965; and the Heisei tunnel, started in 2001, making this place unlike anywhere else in Japan. The Meiji tunnel is the oldest brick-clad tunnel in Japan (and also the fifth oldest extant tunnel in Japan).

Hyogo Areas

around-area-map

Hyogo prefecture stretches from the north coast to the south coast on the western end of the popular Kansai region, encompassing verdant mountains, urban beaches, and fantastic historical sights. The prefecture’s main attractions lie along the south coast at Kobe, the prefectural capital, a pretty harbor city best known for its production of the renowned Kobe beef, and Himeji, the home of Himeji Castle, one of the country’s most beautifully preserved feudal castles, perched magically atop a hill.
