Goyu Avenue of Pines is an approximately 600 meter long row of pine trees from Goyu-shuku to Akasaka-shuku, prosperous post-station towns along the former Tokaido Road. The trees were planted by order of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1604 as a way to protect travelers from the blazing sun in the summer and the howling wind and snow in the winter. Of the Go-kaido Road (Five Highways radiating from Edo) there are now very few places where avenues of pines can be found. The Goyu Avenue of Pines has been designated as a natural monument in Japan. In the novel, Tokaidochu Hizakurige (known as Shank's Mare), the Goyu Avenue of Pines is where the main characters Yajirobe and Kitahachi were to be bewitched by a fox. The nearest station is Goyu Station.

Aichi Areas

around-area-map

Aichi is a prefecture of great natural beauty with Nagoya city at its heart, a busy hub home to a labyrinth of underground shops and the 17th-century Nagoya Castle. Castles are easy to find in this history-rich prefecture, but the highlight for history buffs has to be the Museum Meiji-mura, where preserved buildings from the turn of the 20th century are displayed in all their grandeur in an outdoor museum.
