A 308 meter long, three meter wide tunnel built entirely of stone which was constructed along the treacherous Isegami Pass when the Ina Highway was opened in 1897 running north-south through Nagano and connecting to Nagoya. All stone tunnels are a rarity, and, as an example of Meiji period highway tunnels in the Chubu region, this tunnel was designated a National Tangible Cultural Property in 2000.

Aichi Pref. Toyotashi Habuchou Oninotaira 5

Aichi Areas

around-area-map

Aichi is a prefecture of great natural beauty with Nagoya city at its heart, a busy hub home to a labyrinth of underground shops and the 17th-century Nagoya Castle. Castles are easy to find in this history-rich prefecture, but the highlight for history buffs has to be the Museum Meiji-mura, where preserved buildings from the turn of the 20th century are displayed in all their grandeur in an outdoor museum.
