    Shiga Pref. Takashimashi Shinasahichouharie 372
A community located in Harie Shinasahi-Cho, Takashima City. The community makes use of “kabata,” interconnected water stations used for daily needs such as washing vegetables through which the abundant spring waters of the area are circulated via canals. The kabata themselves are located on the grounds of private homes and accordingly visitors may not tour them without permission; instead, a guided tour is required to see this unique and beautiful local cultural aspect.

    Shiga Pref. Takashimashi Shinasahichouaiba 1600-1
A water bird watching facility situated along Prefectural Route 333 in Aiba Shinasahi-cho, Takashima City. The facility has an indoor observation room from which visitors can watch the water birds on Lake Biwa through binoculars. An adjoining café serves a buffet-style lunch. The facility also conducts water bird watching tours as well as outdoor activities such as tree climbing and canoeing.

No one could control nature. Dont expect too much on seeing lots of birds. We didnt manage to see any interesting ones. No herons. No egrets. Nothing. Disappointing.

  • Streets of Hino
    Travel / Tourism
    Shiga Gamo-gun Hino Cho Okubo
This old town area of central Hino once flourished during the Edo period as a castle town, and later as a merchant town. Here, one can see the vestiges of bygone times along the district streets of Okamotocho, Shimizu, Shinmachi, and Okubocho with their extended wooden fences bordering merchant magnate estates. The houses have magnificent whitewashed earthen warehouses and sajikimado windows, built just for watching the Hino Festival from the comfort of their homes. These line of houses are distinctive in that they are lined up in a zig-zag pattern similar to saw-teeth. This is typical of the castle town street designs of the civil war Sengoku period.

Visitors to Shiga prefecture are almost always hopping east across the prefectural border from Kyoto, and they are almost certainly Lake Biwa-bound. Covering an area of 670 square kilometers, Lake Biwa makes up the bulk of Shiga prefecture, with beautiful lakeside paths that offer myriad walking and cycling opportunities, connecting a string of museums, shrines, and picturesque views that finally lead you to Hikone Castle on the eastern side of the lake.
