The Honko-ji Temple is a temple belonging to the Hongan-ji sect of the Jodo Shinshu School of Buddhism, located in Hida City, Gifu Prefecture. The temple is renowned as one of the finest in the Hida region thanks to its magnificent Hon-do main hall (made almost entirely from Japanese Cypress wood), Shoro (bell tower), and San-mon (main gate). The Honko-ji Temple is one of the temples visited in the Hida Furukawa Three Temples Pilgrimage, an important winter event in the Hida-Furukawa region that takes place on January 15 every year. On this day, the banks of the Setogawa River and the historic streets are lined with around one thousand traditional Japanese-style candles and large “snow candles”; in this magical atmosphere, pilgrims visit and pray at first the Honko-ji Temple, then the Enko-ji Temple and the Shinshu-ji Temple.

This Japanese candle shop is about five minutes on foot from the JR Takayama Main Line Hida Furukawa Station on Ichinomachi Street, which is sometimes used as a set for TV dramas. There are very few Japanese candle shops. Founded over 240 years ago, it’s said this is the only one that makes all their products by hand. The candles are perfect vegetable based, so they don’t give off much soot and maintain a flame well. They’re also used for the traditional event known as Santera Mairi, the Three Temple Pilgrimage. The candles make popular souvenirs, and you can see them being made at the store.

They make and sell dry sausages, ham, pork patties, and bacon made from Kagoshima Kurobuta pork produced by a veteran farm. The workshop is modeled after an old building in Franche-Comte's Jura area and the large smoke house has a flue at the center for use in smoking their meats. Their premium dried white cured sausage has a deep, distinctive flavor that many customers find addictive."
