This shrine located on the top of Mt. Mitake (also known as Musashi Mitakesan) in Ome City flourished as a sacred place for mountain worship. It is reported to have been established in 91 BC. In addition to the former honden (main shrine), which was designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the Tokyo metropolitan government, the current honden in shinmei-zukuri style (a style of shrine architecture based on that of Ise Jingu), and the haiden (hall of worship) in gongen-zukuri style (a style of Shinto architecture in which the main hall and worship hall share one roof), visitors can see the “Akaito Odoshi Oyoroi (odoshi armor with red strings),” which is a National Treasure, in the Homotsuden (treasure house). A grand kagura performance that is open to the public is held every year on the third Sunday in June and on the Senior Citizen’s Day in September. Since Musashi-Mitake Jinja enshrines a white wolf in the form of an “oinusama” (sacred dog), there have been increasing numbers of worshippers who come to pray for their beloved dogs’ health, and the shrine accepts requests for prayers on behalf of pet dogs.

A Shingon Daigo Buddhist temple located in Shiobune, Ome City, Tokyo. The temple is said to have been founded by the mythical 800 year old nun Yao Bikuni during the Taika era (645-650). The temple's principal object of worship is an 11 faced, 1,000 armed, 1,000 eyed figure of Avalokitesvara. Bigleaf hydrangeas, lilies, Japanese clover, red spider lilies, and other plants bloom seasonally on the temple's grounds. An azalea festival is held at the temple in spring when the azaleas come into full bloom.

Beautiful azalea if you time it right. We went on April 24 2023 and it was a bit passed full bloom, but still over 50% blooming and not terribly crowded. There is a nice hiking path nearby which is...

At the Okutama Mizu-to-Midori-no-Fureaikan visitors can learn in an easy to understand way about the importance of water and nature, history of Okutama and the structure of dams. Visitors can learn from not only images and exhibitions but also by experience. There is also the Katakuri no Hana restaurant with a panoramic view overlooking Lake Okutama and the natural scenery from the windows, where guests can taste the regional cuisine of Okutama.

An art museum located in Mitake, Ome City, Tokyo, where Gyokudo Kawai, the great master of Japanese painting in modern times, lived. Exhibitions change seven times throughout the year depending on the season ensuring visitors will always see something new every time they visit. The building is wheelchair friendly, and not only are the exhibits well worth seeing but the gallery room itself, reconstructed to how it would have looked at the time is also a must-see. As well as being able to enjoy some soymilk yuba (dried bean curd skin) udon in the restaurant, Imoutoya, there are also plenty of local souvenirs to be had such as local sake and confectionery.

Loved this small museum. I wasnt familiar with the artist Gyokudo beforehand but was impressed with his talent. Wish I couldve taken a photo of some of his landscapes and flowers. Just stunning...

    Tokyo Akirunoshi Yokosawa 134
A Shingon Buddhist temple located in Yokosawa, Akiruno City, Tokyo. The temple is said to have been built in 1191 by the Kamakura period military commander Hirayama Sueshige. The temple is also famous for its white bushclover; when the samurai lord Date Masamune visited the temple, he was enchanted by their blossoms, and the temple still possesses a letter from Date sent by express messenger a few days later asking the temple to send him some of the flowers.

    Tokyo Akiruno-shi Itsukaichi 1081
"Located a 15-minute walk from Musashi-Itsukaichi Station on the JR Itsukaichi Line. Exactly when this ancient Shinto shrine was founded is unclear, but in the ""Sandai jitsuroku"", a history text compiled in 901, the shrine is noted to have been conferred Sixth Order of Merit, Junior Fourth Rank. The shrine grounds are enwrapped in so many Japanese cedars and hinoki cypress trees that they are dark and shadowy even in the middle of the day, creating a magical atmosphere. Today, the shrine is also known by the nickname ""Matsubara-sama"" (""Lord Pine Grove""). The Akiru Shrine Grand Festival, considered one of the three biggest festivals in Akiruno, is held at the end of September. During the festival, a 100 kan (400 kilogram) hexagonal portable shrine, a style seen almost nowhere else in the country, is carried throughout the town and is truly a stunning sight to behold."

    Tokyo Nishitama-gun Hinoharamura 3221
This museum is located next to the Kyodo Shiryokan bus stop and, as its name implies, the facility introduces the history and culture of Hinohara Village. Here you can learn about the history of the area spanning some 9,000 years, all the way back to prehistoric times, through artefacts, ancient texts, and other materials. The museum also possesses a hand mirror believed to have been left behind by Matsuhime, daughter of the mighty samurai lord Takeda Shingen, when she ran away and stayed for a time in this area. The museum is closed on Tuesdays unless Tuesday is a public holiday, in which case the museum will be closed the following day.

Hinohara Village is situated in the mountains of Tokyo. There is a very informative museum where the local culture and history are well presented. I wish to visit again in the future.

This unique art museum is in Okutama's natural surroundings. It was made by relocating an antique house built in the late Edo period. The Tama River Valley flows right next to it and visitors can hear the constant murmur of the river. It's exactly half-way between the JR Ome line's Mitake and Kawai Stations and about a 20-minute walk from either one. It mainly exhibits paintings and traditional crafts made by artists with ties to Okutama. They hold special exhibits four or five times a year.

This museum collects and displays kimono, a beautiful and traditional example of Japanese culture. The museum operates out of a remodeled, 200-year-old kura storehouse, and as the seasons change it displays a variety of kimono exhibitions, such as kimono worn by imperial princesses; kimono worn by Edo period samurai, court nobles, and merchants; and kimono-style garments from areas along the Silk Road in China and Central Asia. The museum's collection of over 500 items is of immense historical value and each exudes an aura of the memories and hopes of the people who wore them. A must-see are the kimono worn by the Taisho Emperor and Empress during his enthronement ceremony. The museum also displays kimono and other traditional costumes borrowed from museums nationwide.

    Tokyo Oumeshi Komakichou
This thatched roof minka residence is next to the Ome Municipal Museum of Provincial History at the entrance to Kamanofuchi Park. The single-story structure has a gabled, hipped roof and an interior divided into three large rooms. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century in the Yukura area, Ome City (former Kita-Osoki Village), but was dismantled and reconstructed at its present location. Details of the original workmanship can still be seen. Small but relatively well preserved, it's an important window into the lives of ordinary farmers in the Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture regions. It's a National Important Cultural Property and entry is free of charge.

You can reach this art museum by taking a bus from JR Okutama Station, getting off at the Higashi Nippara stop, and walking about three minutes. They have a focus on the work of the artist Saburo Kurata, originally from Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward, who was invited to represent Japan at the International Society for Education through Art. He visited about 50 countries and created over 2,000 sketches. The exhibit changes several times a year. Housed in a restored elementary school, there is also a display of artwork owned by the town of Okutama. The museum is a good place to get in touch with art in a quiet setting in the midst of nature.

The smallish concrete gravity dam is about 30 meters high and 61 meters across the top. It also has the largest fish ladder in Tokyo. These structures provide passage for fish, and varieties including yamame salmon, sweetfish, and rainbow trout use Shiromaru Dam's when swimming upstream. There are only 30 fish ladders in the whole country, and it is rare for a dam of this size to have one.

Tokyo Areas

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
