    Tokyo Oumeshi Mitake 1-75
An art museum located in Mitake, Ome City, Tokyo, where Gyokudo Kawai, the great master of Japanese painting in modern times, lived. Exhibitions change seven times throughout the year depending on the season ensuring visitors will always see something new every time they visit. The building is wheelchair friendly, and not only are the exhibits well worth seeing but the gallery room itself, reconstructed to how it would have looked at the time is also a must-see. As well as being able to enjoy some soymilk yuba (dried bean curd skin) udon in the restaurant, Imoutoya, there are also plenty of local souvenirs to be had such as local sake and confectionery.

Loved this small museum. I wasnt familiar with the artist Gyokudo beforehand but was impressed with his talent. Wish I couldve taken a photo of some of his landscapes and flowers. Just stunning...

This art museum stands on the Ome Highway and looks out over the Tama River, a veritable symbol of the natural beauty to be found in Ome. The museum's collection of 2,200 items primarily centers on modern Nihonga Japanese paintings and Western-style paintings. In order to educate as many people as possible about its collection, the museum holds practical classes and lectures; it also engages in musical and other ventures. The museum also conducts special exhibitions which look at art from a variety of perspectives to make it easier to understand, as well as many unique and distinctive exhibitions such as ones introducing artists connected to the area. The citizens' gallery on the first floor can be used by the general public on days when the museum is not scheduled to use it.

    Tokyo Nishitamagunokutamamachi Kawai Tanpaku 53
This unique art museum is in Okutama's natural surroundings. It was made by relocating an antique house built in the late Edo period. The Tama River Valley flows right next to it and visitors can hear the constant murmur of the river. It's exactly half-way between the JR Ome line's Mitake and Kawai Stations and about a 20-minute walk from either one. It mainly exhibits paintings and traditional crafts made by artists with ties to Okutama. They hold special exhibits four or five times a year.

    Tokyo Nishitamagunokutamamachi Nippara 775-4
You can reach this art museum by taking a bus from JR Okutama Station, getting off at the Higashi Nippara stop, and walking about three minutes. They have a focus on the work of the artist Saburo Kurata, originally from Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward, who was invited to represent Japan at the International Society for Education through Art. He visited about 50 countries and created over 2,000 sketches. The exhibit changes several times a year. Housed in a restored elementary school, there is also a display of artwork owned by the town of Okutama. The museum is a good place to get in touch with art in a quiet setting in the midst of nature.

Tokyo Areas

around-area-map

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
