Tokyo Oshimamachi Motomachi Kanda Yashiki 617
One of the world's few museums dedicated to volcanoes. With a focus on records pertaining to Izu Oshima's 1986 eruption, visitors learn about volcanism, volcanic disasters, and disaster preparation. The eruption of Mt. Mihara at the center of the island was the first in 565 years as such a large-scale natural disaster that developed into a fissure eruption on the outer crater. The island had an unprecedented evacuation of the entire population, and records pertaining to it are considered crucial for future disaster preparation. Through various exhibits and a capsule that simulates exploring beneath the earth's surface, you learn more about the island's still active volcano and others around the world.

"A large park in the Sentsu district of northeastern Izu Oshima. The camellia garden has about 3,200 cultivated and 5,000 wild Camellia japonica trees. It's adjacent to the Camellia Museum which provides a variety of camellia related information. The roughly 3.27 square kilometer grounds also have a greenhouse, a rest area, and a lookout. It was certified as an ""International Camellia Garden of Excellence,"" having met a strict set of criteria. Its expansive scale even lead the director of the British chapter of the International Camellia Society to declare it the ""Best in the world."""

    Tokyo Oshimamachi Motomachi 1-16-7
Just a two-minute walk from Motomachi Port on Izu Oshima Island. Look for the red gate. Adjacent to Hotel Akamon, the site consists of the remains of a residence, an observation platform, a secret passage, a shrine, etc. In the end of the Heian period, Minamoto no Tametomo-also known as Chinzei Hachiro-who was banished to Oshima lived in this mansion. Only permitted for him, the highly formal vermilion gate is impressive. The site draws both students and history professors because of its storied past. Tametomo Shrine is in a grove deep within the precincts and celebrates Tametomo himself.
  • Oshimamachi Folk Museum
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Oshimamachi Motomachi
This Oshima-machi folk museum got its start with a love of nature and the wish to pass the area's ancestral traditions on to the next generation. It's located near Oshima Airport. They have over 300 items related to folklore on display, as well as Jomon period pottery and stoneware, Oshima festivals, and materials related to Oshima's history of volcanic activity. The displays give an idea of the tough conditions people of the past lived under. A traditional Japanese house adjacent to the site recreates the lifestyle of the former times. They also offer commemorative photos in the distinctive traditional garb of local girls known as Anko-san.
  • Odoriko no Sato Museum (Former Minatoya Ryokan) and Former Jinnomaru Residence
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Oshimamachi Habuminato
"Odoriko no Sato refers to the eastern part of Habuminato Port with its historic townscape. The atmospheric area was a setting in Yasunari Kawabata's novel ""The Izu Dancer."" The hillside Minatoya Ryokan is a three-story wooden building-very rare during the Meiji period-and a former inn. It recalls the old days of Habu Port when it was busy with travelers and fishermen from around Japan. Today it operates as a museum. Up the slope from there, we also recommend visiting Kyujin-no-Marutei, an important site in the development of Oshima between the late Edo and early Showa periods."
  • Doyama Shrine
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Toshimamura
This shrine is located 140 kilometers south of Tokyo, and is the closest to the mountains on Toshima Island, surrounded by beautiful nature. It is unclear as to when exactly this shrine was built, but apparently it was originally established at the outset of the Meiji period to enshrine various Shinto deities for different households to pray to. During an excavation in 1992, a four-sided copper Japanese mirror and copper coins were found here. The Japanese mirror was likely used during ceremonies and rituals during the late 12th and early 13th century. It can be seen first-hand at the Toshimamura Kyodo Shiryokan museum located on the island.

Tokyo Areas

around-area-map

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
