Nature Spots in Izu Oshima / Toshima Area

  • Mt. Mihara
    Travel / Tourism
    Oshima cho, Tokyo
"Mt. Mihara is a 758-meter high volcano situated roughly in the middle of Izu Oshima Island. Originally created by a volcanic eruption in 1777, Mt. Mihara has continued to erupt on a fairly regular basis since then, giving it the appearance that it has today. The most recent major eruption was in 1986; the ""Godzilla Rock"" that emerged during that eruption is a popular tourist attraction. There are hiking trails on and around the mountain; visitors can choose the route that best suits their interests and their state of physical fitness. The mouth of the volcano, at the summit, is a shaft-like crater that is roughly 300 meters wide and over 200 meters deep; because of the absence of any obstructions, there are superb views from the summit."

"The ""Ura-Desert,"" which stretches to the northeast of Mt. Mihara, is the only area in Japan described as a ""desert. It is a black land formed by volcanic ash and lava, and strong winds and rainwater make it difficult for vegetation to grow. The easiest access is from the ""Moon and Desert Line,"" where you drive to the parking lot and walk for about 10 minutes. However, the Ura-Desert is a specially protected area in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, and vehicles are not allowed in the area."
  • Tsubaki Tunnel

    Tokyo Oshimamachi Senzu
A beautiful street in the Sentsu district of northeastern Izu Oshima. Camellia trees extend for about 100 meters along both sides, creating a natural tunnel. Nice and cool even in the middle of summer, it's a part of the Oshima Loop Road, Tokyo Metropolitan Road Route 208. The thick-trunked trees with their reaching branches are a sight to see. Photographers visit in droves from January to March when they come into bloom.
  • Fudeshima Island

    Tokyo Oshimamachi Habuminato
"This 30-meter-high rock formation is known locally as the ""dwelling place of the gods."" It got its name because it's shaped like the tip of a writing brush. It's unusual shape and picturesque appearance has made it a sacred spot since ancient times. The Fudeshima Coast has tall mountains facing the sea lined with sea cliffs carved by the pounding of the waves. It's been designated as a Tokyo Historic Scenic Spot and one of Japan's 100 Best Beaches. It is believed that hundreds of thousands of years ago there was a stratovolcano in the sea off the coast that was over 1,000 meters high."

Tokyo Areas

around-area-map

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
