Yanaizu Kokuzouson Temple is a historic temple that, according to tradition, was founded in 807 A.D. by Tokuitsu Daishi. The main object of veneration in the Temple is the statue of “Fukuchiman Kokuzo Bosatsu” that is said to have been carved by the bodhisattva Gyoki, praying three times after each stroke of the blade. The statues of guardian deities Mahakala and Vaisravana that are positioned on the left and right sides of the main statue are said to be the work of Kobo Daishi. There are a number of mysterious legends relating to the Temple, including the legends of the moon-viewing well and the pine tree of child-bearing, etc.; these legends are collectively referred to as the “Seven Mysteries of Kokuzozon.” The Temple has a café which offers irori hearth-cooked cuisine, and which is a great place to take a rest after worshipping at or visiting the Temple.
