There are four separate areas which are the Farm Village, the Sea Village, the Mountain Village and the City and you can walk through each village to experience the different atmospheres. At the Frontier Village Restaurant in the museum, you can eat the simple but delicious “Imo Mochi” and the restaurant’s original Tondenhei (Settlers’) Set Meal.

I’m astounded at the amount of effort and dedication it must take to maintain this place. It’s literally a village you can easily get lost in. I went during winter when there was barely anyone (it...

    Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Nishi-ku Kotoni 3-jo 6-1-28
This ancient temple is in Kotoni, where the first military settlers came to Hokkaido in 1875. Most of the settlers who came here to develop Hokkaido were followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, and records say this temple was built to satisfy settlers' calls for a place of worship. The Shourou sanmon gate was built in 1998, and is of a now-rare traditional wooden architectural style. This massive gate rests in a comfortable old residential neighborhood, and seems to have the power to stop everyone passing by in their tracks. This place is famous in Kotoni for the 108 Bell-ringing on New Year's Eve, and anyone who gets a number ticket can ring the bell themselves.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
