The first Nikka Whisky distillery built in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru who after visiting Scotland became the first Japanese person to master the whisky manufacturing process. Here you can come and see for yourself the whole distillery process. Inside the distillery you can find many things of interest such as displays on the history of whisky and its manufacturing process, a whisky museum where you can sample some whisky for yourself, and you can also see the former residence of Masataka Taketsuru which was originally in Yamada Town in the suburbs of Yoichi Town but dismantled and rebuilt here in the distillery. There are nine buildings on the distillery premises which have been designated as tangible cultural assets of Japan such as the distillation building and the first whisky storehouse.

As a fan of the products and being in the neighborhood, I went for a visit to this complex. I was unable to book a tour of the facility, which I understand are only conducted in Japanese, but did...

From the windows of the Underwater Observation Boat New Shakotan-go you can see the beautifully transparent waters known as the Shakotan Blue. It takes about 40 minutes to go around the scenic spots and witness the spectacular scenery of the sea around Shakotan. Boat departures take place every day from late April through to late October (canceled if heavy rain, inquire beforehand) and depart at regular intervals of about one hour. From Sapporo to Shakotan Bikuni takes about 2.5 hours by highway bus. From Yoichi Station takes about 48 minutes by regular bus.

Great tour with beautiful views, some underwater action and the feeding of a flock of seagulls. Money well spent. The tour guide only speaks Japanese but that doesnt take away from the experience...

  • Cape Kamui
    Travel / Tourism
    Hokkaido Shakotangunshakotanchou Kouzakichou
Located at the northwestern tip of the Shakotan Peninsula, Cape Kamui has imposing cliffs that rise up 80 meters out of the Sea of Japan. From the car park at the foot of the Cape, visitors can walk up to the top of the cliffs along “Charenka’s Path” promenade, a distance of 770 meters. It takes around 20–30 minutes to complete the walk to the edge of the cliffs; visitors can enjoy marvelous views of the sea as they walk. At the cliff edge, there is a panoramic, 300-degree view of the sea horizon, giving a real sense of how the Earth is actually round, not flat. In early summer, the Hokkaido Daylilies are in bloom, which is a beautiful sight. Please note that opening hours of the gate at the entrance to the path up to the cliffs vary depending on the time of year.

    Shakotan-cho, Shakotan-gun, Hokkaido
Cape Ogon protrudes out into the sea just beyond Bikuni Harbor. There is an approximately 410-meter footpath, with three entrances giving access to the observation platform. In the past, a lookout tower was located on the Cape to watch for shoals of Pacific herring out at sea, and the name “Cape Ogon” (“Golden Cape”) was given to the Cape because the shoals of herring flashed gold in the setting sun. The way in which both the sky and the sea become tinged with crimson as the sun goes down is very beautiful, and Cape Ogon has been said to have the best sunsets in Japan.

This is probably missed by most people on the way to Cape Shakotan. Its however just a short walk from the Shakotan tourist centre. It is a hilly trail and a pretty short walk, till you reach a 2...

Great points of the farm are that there is no time limit, the fruit is grown in the open, and pesticide is used minimally. Certified as an ""Eco-Farmer"", meaning farmers who are engaged in environmentally friendly agriculture, families can pick fruit with peace of mind. The view from the top of the hill overlooking the natural landscape is breathtaking. The farm is busy with many visitors picking fruit in the season from the end of June to the end of July."
