Cape Erimo is a cape at the southernmost point in Hokkaido, where the Hidaka Mountains gradually fall in elevation as they approach the Pacific Ocean. It is renowned as one of the windiest places in Japan, with wind-speeds that often exceed 30 meters per second. At the Erimo Wind Museum, visitors can experience Erimo’s strong winds for themselves, and both adults and children will enjoy viewing wild Harbor Seals from the Museum’s observation deck. In 2010, Cape Erimo was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty under its Ainu-language name Pirika Noka (meaning “beautiful shape”), in recognition of its spiritual importance to the Ainu people as a sacred place.

It takes about 4 hours from Sapporo to Cape Erimo by car through the highway. Usually, the wind is very strong there, and this cape is often misty. Please take care of the weather. Scenery surrounded...

A garden of approximately 79,000 square meters open to the public which is also a farm importing, producing and selling trees, operated by “Manabe Garden Nurseries”. It is well-known for its production of conifers, unusual in Japan. The garden has three differently themed areas—a European garden, a Japanese garden and a landscaped garden for you to stroll around. We hope you enjoy the scenery which is as magical as if you were lost in a fairytale land.

    Hokkaido Obihiroshi Higashisanjouminami 2-1
Founded in 1910, this shrine in Obihiro City, Hokkaido is dedicated to three gods of land reclamation. All of them are associated with national land, and because the shrine faces National Route 38, they are also honored for disaster prevention and traffic safety. A traditional dondo-yaki event is held on January 15th every year where participants burn New Year's pine decorations and sacred shrine ropes; these days, they also immolate votive plaques, talismans, and household altars. In February the shrine holds an event marking Setsubun, the holiday at the end of winter. They also conduct an exorcism of bad luck called yakubarai.

Hokkaido Obihiroshi Bieichou West 4 Line 107
This garden comprised of expansive flower fields extends along Tokachiheiya’s rural area in the outskirts of Obihiro. This park was created when gardener Akiyo Shichiku was 63 years old. Shichiku, who has a long-standing love of flowers, felt that she wanted to create a landscape where the wildflowers she played in as a child would bloom. All of the plants inside the 4,950 square meters of land that includes assorted trees from Hokkaido such as Japanese white birch and magnolia as well as more than 2,500 types of flowers were planted by Shichiku, and seeing the appearance of the garden change each season is a soothing sight to behold. The park has a restaurant and a horticulture shop.

After walking the garden, it was a nice break for tea and scones. Let be the pumpkin scone and the cream taste great. The tea set was lovely and the view out into the garden was great.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
