- (Provided by service)Tsurugaoka Hachimangu was called the guardian deity of the samurai of Kamakura. - (Provided by service)This temple began when third generation shogun of the Muromachi shogunate Ashikaga Yoshimitsu inherited the Saionji family's mountain villa and called the villa “Kitayamadono.” After his death it was changed into a Zen temple named “Rokuonji.” The reliquary hall is a three-story building shining beautifully in gold and looks pretty reflected in the Kyokoike (mirror pond). This brilliant architecture was a symbol of Kitayama culture but burned down in a 1950 fire, then was rebuilt in 1955. In 1994 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The temple was founded in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji to memorialize Emperor Go-Daigo. The temple was founded as the first of the five Kyoto Gozan premier temples and the spacious grounds encompassed over 150 sub-temples, but these were all lost in a series of later fires. The various temple buildings standing today were reconstructed in the Meiji period; the abbot’s chamber enshrines a seated figure of Gautama Buddha created in the Fujiwara period. The temple’s circular garden, built around a central pond, is a designated Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty and makes use of Mt. Arashiyama and Mt. Kameyama in the background. The garden looks the same as it did approximately 700 years ago when it was first created by Muso Kokushi.

The boat course was originally used as a means to transport materials down the Hozu River to Kyoto and Osaka. The natural and seasonal beauty of the gorge through which the river travels, however, was so great that this section of the river was turned into a boat ride course for tourists in 1895. Veteran boatman use pole, rudder, and oar to guide the vessel, impressively squeezing through rocky stretches. The boat continues to operate even on rainy days, when a tent is erected for the comfort of riders.

The main temple nave enshrines a standing figure of an eleven-faced Kannon and is built in the elegant Shinden-zukuri style. The Kiyomizu Stage jutting out over the Cliffside offers a sweeping view of the streets of Kyoto and blooming cherry trees, verdant plant life, or autumn foliage depending on the season, making it a popular photo spot. The three channeled Otowa Waterfall is said to provide benefits such as long life and people line up to drink its waters. Bustling with students on a school excursion as well as tourists both domestic and international, the Kiyomizu-dera Temple is one of Kyoto’s most popular tourist sites.

The castle was built on a magnificent scale, but was destroyed just 17 years later after the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the destruction of the Toyotomi clan in the Siege of Osaka in 1615. Thereafter, the castle was rebuilt by the Tokugawa shogunate under the command of Todo Takatora but was once again lost due to a fire caused by a lightning strike. The current castle tower is the third generation to stand here and was completed in 1931 through donations from local citizens. The interior of the castle is a history museum and visitors can enjoy information about the history of Osaka Castle and dioramas. The castle was registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property in 1997.

Structures such as the castle tower built in the early Edo period still stand today, and these are also registered as National treasures and national Important Cultural Properties. One of the most prominent theories is that the castle was originally erected as a fort by Akamatsu Sadanori in 1346. Ikeda Terumasa began renovating the castle when he became the lord of the castle after the Battle of Sekigahara, expanding it into the expansive compound seen today. The castle tower is located in the southeast corner of the foundation. The castle looks to be composed of five tiers from the outside and internally is comprised of six floors above ground and one subterranean level. The castle shining a blinding white in the light of the sun is truly a beautiful sight.

Kato Yoshiaki started the castle construction in 1602, and it is the last complete castle to have been constructed in Japan, which was completed over the longest length of time (approximately a quarter century) in Japanese architectural history. The inner citadel of the castle is located on the summit of Mt. Katsuyama at an altitude of 132 meters, while an outer citadel and a third citadel are at the base of the mountain; it is a huge castle and is counted as one of the coalition of the three largest flatland mountain castles in Japan. You can see from Mt. Ishizuchi to Iyo-nada with one sweep of the eye from the top floor of the large castle keep—that scenery is magnificent.

In the center of the area’s hot spring district stands the Dogo Onsen Honkan, a public bathhouse whose building is over 120 years old and which continues to serve large numbers of customers. The waters of the alkaline simple spring are said to promote recovery from fatigue and alleviate nerve pain and joint pain. Some of the many nearby sightseeing destinations include Isanawa Shrine, the Shiki Memorial Museum, and the Dogo Haikara-dori Street shopping district, and visitors can enjoy exploring the area’s history in addition to therapeutic hot spring bathing.

This is also a popular spot for hanami flower-viewing parties for cherry and lotus blossoms, and every year in the spring a cherry blossom festival is held where the castle walls and cherry blossoms are lit up at night; although the Otakayashiki site and Tamon turrets are normally closed at night, they are opened for this special time. - (Provided by service)When the feudal lord Kuroda Nagamasa built Fukuoka Castle, he used part of a cove on Hakata Bay to create the castle’s outer moat (a great moat, or “ohori” in Japanese). Thereafter, the area around the pond was turned into a garden and later opened to the public as the prefecturally operated Ohori Park in 1929. The park’s great pond is encircled by a two kilometer long path, making it perfect for strolls and jogging. There are also cafés and restaurants in the park, making it a popular location for locals to rest and relax.
