There are numerous shops along both sides of the street offering famous Tokyo sweets such as kibidango (millet dumplings), kushidango (mochi dumplings on skewers), ningyo-yaki (sponge cakes in various shapes filled with red bean paste) and kaminari-okoshi (sweet rice crackers) as well as souvenirs geared towards foreign tourists, and here visitors can really enjoy the atmosphere of a Japanese shitamachi (downtown neighborhood). The electric signboards that are beautifully uniform are a must-see.

The current building is the fifth iteration of the Kabuki-za, having undergone reconstruction and remodeling in accordance with destruction by fire, repairs, and changing eras since it opened in 1889. In addition to the many types of seats from the first floor box seats to the third floor seats, on the fourth floor are the popular “hito-maku miseki,” special seats that allow people to see any one act of a kabuki play. The building's Japanese-style exterior with its tiled roof and balustrades makes for a splendid balance with the Kabukiza Tower that stands behind it and the Ginza streetscapes. In the basement is the Kobikicho Plaza with souvenir shops and restaurants.

A lush forest occupies the inner garden area; beloved as a rare green space in the heart of Tokyo, highlights include the magnificent Honden front shrine; wooden torii gate which is the largest in Japan; the Gyoen garden, which requires a small fee to enter but which is beautiful year-round; and the Kiyomasa Well (located in the Gyoen garden), from which samurai lord Kato Kiyomasa personally drew water. The outer garden is a Japanese-style garden which preserves how the area looked when it was still largely wilderness; highlights include a broadleaf tree-enshrouded walking path; South Pond on which bloom lotuses; and some 1,500 Japanese iris plants spanning 150 varieties which Emperor Meiji had planted for Empress Shoken - the best time to see the iri…

Zojoji Temple was founded by the monk Yuyo Shoso shonin in 1393 as an orthodox and fundamental nembutsu seminary for the Jodo sect. It used to be a large-scale temple with more than 120 buildings and more than 100 dormitories, and structures such as the Important Cultural Property Sangedatsumon (Three Gates of Liberation) that escaped damage from the war and the reconstructed main hall give an indication of the temple’s former glory. Tokyo Tower can be seen in the background behind the main hall, making this a popular photo spot. Inside the temple is the mausoleum of the Tokugawa family which contains six of the 15 Tokugawa shoguns.

The enshrined deities are Susanoo-no-Mikoto, Oyamakuino-kami and Hondawake-no-Mikoto. The shaden (main shrine building) built in 1706 is completely covered in lacquer and is a masterpiece of gongen-zukuri (style of Shinto architecture in which the main hall and worship hall share one roof, and are connected via an intermediate passageway), and seven buildings have received designation as national Important Cultural Properties. Vermillion-lacquered torii gates stand in a row at the smaller Otome Inari Shrine on the premises, making this a popular spot to take photos. The shrine is visited by many worshippers in April when 3,000 azaleas bloom profusely and in September when one of Edo three biggest festivals is held.

- (Provided by service)Kenrokuen is a traditional Japanese-style garden in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The garden is said to have been first constructed in the mid-17th century in the outer bailey of Kanazawa Castle as a private garden for the lords of the Kaga Domain; it has been designated as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty, and it ranks alongside the Kairakuen garden in Mito and the Korakuen garden in Okayama as one of the “Three Great Gardens of Japan.” Kenrokuen is renowned for its beautiful vistas, which make effective use of how nature changes with the seasons. For example, a special feature of the garden during the winter months is the Yuki-tsuri (ropes attached in a conical array to protect tree branches in a garden during the winter); another seasonal feature is the red and white plum blossom in the plum grove. In 2009 the Kenrokuen garden was awarded three stars (the maximum possible) in the Michelin Green Guide. During the peak tourist season, there is free…

The castle was built on a magnificent scale, but was destroyed just 17 years later after the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the destruction of the Toyotomi clan in the Siege of Osaka in 1615. Thereafter, the castle was rebuilt by the Tokugawa shogunate under the command of Todo Takatora but was once again lost due to a fire caused by a lightning strike. The current castle tower is the third generation to stand here and was completed in 1931 through donations from local citizens. The interior of the castle is a history museum and visitors can enjoy information about the history of Osaka Castle and dioramas. The castle was registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property in 1997.

- (Provided by service)The head temple for Shingon Buddhism in Kyushu, the temple’s principal object of worship is a figure of the great priest Kukai. The first temple built by Kukai in Japan after returning from Tang China, it is said that the temple’s name, comprised of the characters for “east” and “long,” was chosen to reflect Kukai’s hope that esoteric Buddhism would long be spread in the east of Asia. The temple’s circular Rokkaku-do hall is both exceptionally functional and beautiful. The temple’s brilliant red five-tier pagoda was just completed in 2011. The giant Fukuoka Daibutsu statue of the Buddha situated on the temple grounds, meanwhile, was completed over a four year period starting in 1988. A spectacular figure 10.8 meters tall and weighing 30 tons, the patterned wall behind the statue enshrines 5,000 smaller Buddha statues. A 15-minute walk from JR Hakata Station.

- (Provided by service)When the feudal lord Kuroda Nagamasa built Fukuoka Castle, he used part of a cove on Hakata Bay to create the castle’s outer moat (a great moat, or “ohori” in Japanese). Thereafter, the area around the pond was turned into a garden and later opened to the public as the prefecturally operated Ohori Park in 1929. The park’s great pond is encircled by a two kilometer long path, making it perfect for strolls and jogging. There are also cafés and restaurants in the park, making it a popular location for locals to rest and relax.
