Leisure / Hobbies Spots in Sakurajima Area

  • Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Miyazaki prefecture, Kagoshima prefecture
This is one of Japan’s early national parks straddling two prefectures of Kagoshima and Miyazaki. It is divided into two regions: the Kirishima area of Kirishima volcanic mountain range and the Kinkowan Bay area of Sakurajima Island, Ibusuki, and Cape Sata. It is a rare region of diverse ecosystems due to the effects of past repetitive changes in the climate, volcanic activity and high altitude. In addition to being able to see topography specific to a volcanic zone and fumarolic phenomena such as the caldera, crater lake, and Shirasu-daichi Plateau, hot springs dot the area, and many visitors come to the healing hot springs throughout the year. In the Ebino Eco-Museum Center in the Kirishima area, multilingual brochures are provided.

Kagoshima Areas

around-area-map

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
