Nagata in Kanoka is a well-known kamaage udon (noodles straight from the pot) restaurant located about 10 minutes on foot from JR Konzoji Station. The restaurant also shows films reflecting udon noodles of Kagawa Prefecture. The kamaage udon noodles with their smooth, chewy texture made with a strong broth go together perfectly with the dipping sauce flavored with dried young sardine. The restaurant also offers a wide variety of side dishes such as takikomi-gohan (boiled rice seasoned with soy sauce and mixed with meat or seafood and savory vegetables) and ohagi (rice balls coated with sweetened red beans, soybean flour or sesame). The spacious restaurant also has seating at the counter making it easy for people by themselves to stop by for something to eat.

Hidden away in the mountains around Manno Town, Nakatado County, Kagawa Prefecture, Yamauchi is a famous udon restaurant frequented by up to 300 people a day on the weekends and holidays. The udon noodles, painstakingly made by the restaurant owner and cooked in a large pot over a wood fire, have a firm texture with a nice bite to them. Their broth, with flavors of dried young sardine coming through, and locally sourced tempura are also very good. Yamauchi’s hiya-atsu udon with piping hot broth on cold noodles is a popular choice.

I ate Udon. That was very nice taste. Udon is different taste by soup and noodles. I like this restaurant’s Udon taste!!

Located in Yogita Town, Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, Yamashita Udon is famous for being the birthplace of bukkake-udon (cold udon noodles with chilled dashi sauce poured over them). People can often be found queuing to get into this popular restaurant on the holidays. Their prized udon noodles cooked in a large pot are particularly rich in flavor especially among Kagawa udon noodles with a smooth texture. As well as their signature bukkake-udon, niku udon (udon noodles with beef) and kake udon (fresh udon noodles in a simple dashi broth) are also popular. Popular toppings include their flavorsome kakiage tempura (mixed vegetable and seafood tempura) with tiny shrimps.

    今回はお昼ご飯で、肉うどん中、ちくわ天ぷらを食べました。 うどんはこしがあって、美味しかったです。 中は2玉という事ですが、 個人的にはちょうど良い量でした。 肉がちょっと甘めでしたね。

Nakano Udon School Kotohirako located at the approach to Kotohiragu which is known for its sea goddess is an interactive facility for preparing the authentic Sanuki udon noodles from scratch while getting instruction from a professional artisan. Freshly made udon noodles are finished as kamaage udon noodles and can be tasted on the spot. After the hands-on activity, you can receive a graduation certificate, a secret book of udon noodles, a rolling pin and a hanging scroll with an old map as a memento. In the souvenir section on the first floor, it sells an udon school set with which you can experience making udon noodles at home and specialty Shikoku products.

Since my mom couldnt walk, we were not looking forward to the visit to Kotohira-gu. And since Kotohira-gu was the only itinerary in the morning, we had thought that it would be a boring touring...

This udon restaurant is located in Manno Town in Nakatado County, Kagawa Prefecture and is said to be the first restaurant to start serving “soy sauce udon.” When you order soy sauce udon, the first things brought to the table are a large radish and a surigane grating dish. You grate the radish yourself and use it to top the udon, then pour on the soy sauce. The plump, springy noodles, sweet soy sauce, and juicy radish combine to produce a refreshing taste.

A restaurant famous for its delicious udon noodles and the fact it operates out of a plastic greenhouse. The restaurant's udon noodles with meat are well reviewed and many customers come back again and again to eat these tasty udon topped with a hearty serving of thinly sliced boneless beef rib. Other very popular menu selections include the kake udon noodles in broth, and broth covered bukkake udon noodles; and side dishes like croquettes and tempura.

Kanakuma was a place to rest on when travelling the Shikoku Pilgrimage and the road connecting Kannonji Temple, Takase, Takuma, Tadotsu, and Marugame. This restaurant has been operating here for three generations, and customers can enjoy handmade udon noodles, mochi rice cakes, and onigiri rice balls. The white miso zoni udon noodles, only served in the winter from November to March, are the restaurant's take on white miso zoni, a popular local dish in Shikoku. Be sure to try it if you come during this time.

Nagata Udon has a 60-year history. Their simple kamaage udon noodles are so good you'll wish you could eat them every day. They're served hot or cold, as are their kamaage tarai udon noodles. They have hiyashi chilled udon noodles, too. For all of these, you can choose the portion size. They also have lots of other items besides udon, like chirashizushi, inari zushi, and oden hot pot. They sell half-dried udon noodles to take with you as a gift too.

"An udon noodle restaurant dedicated to the concept of local production for local consumption and which makes its noodles with ""Sanuki-no-Yume 2009"" flour. The restaurant is actually a mochi rice cake shop which has been in business since the early Showa period, and the establishment takes a break from offering udon during the busy Bon Festival and New Year's periods. The restaurant's exquisite noodles are chewy in texture and carry the subtle flavor of the Kagawa's ""Sanuki-no-Yume 2009"" flour with which they are exclusively made. In addition to udon, the restaurant menu also includes set meals, ohagi (rice ball coated with sweetened red beans), sekihan (steamed rice with red beans), mochi rice cakes, and more."

"This handmade sanuki udon noodle restaurant is located on the shores of Lake Manno an approximately 30-minute drive from the Zentsuji Interchange on the Takamatsu Expressway. While looking at the beautiful scenery of Lake Manno, you can enjoy local dishes made by locals filled with local flavors. ""Yakon udon,"" a specialty using Kagawa Prefecture wheat and the healthy vegetable yacon, is a chewy, no-salt, low-calorie popular diet food. In addition to udon noodles, their handmade yacon croquettes are a very popular menu item ordered by people as a single dish. They also conduct udon-making workshops."

This udon noodle restaurant is located in a residential area one kilometer from Kan-Onji Station. The restaurant has been making delicious, old-fashioned, local-style udon noodles since it was established in 1927. The recipe for its thin noodles, unusual in the Sanuki region, has been handed down through the generations. The noodles have a slippery, perfectly springy texture and go perfectly with a broth which harnesses the innate flavor of dried sardines, kelp and Kagawa soy sauce. The restaurant’s udon, made with uncompromising ingredients, is so delicious, you can eat it every day without tiring of the flavor.

Famous for their original tempura udon, where the large tempura topping barely fits in the bowl, this udon restaurant serves boat-shaped delicate tempura that is balanced on the edge of the udon bowl, and not directly on top of the soup noodles. This unique original dish has been a best seller since the store's opening. The soup noodles themselves have a brimful of wakame seaweed on top, which blends excellently with the flavors. About half of all the customer order this original dish. The recommended way to eat this dish is to first eat the tempura by itself, then enjoy the chewy noodles and broth together, and later enjoy the combination of the tempura dipped in the broth. Another popular dish is the kitsune udon, where the soup noodles are completely covered with a patty of marinated deep-fried tofu.

This udon restaurant is about a 10-minute drive from the Sanuki Toyonaka Interchange off the Takamatsu Expressway. Visitors can appreciate an authentic bowl of Sanuki udon with chewy resilient noodles in this quaint little store nestled by the Saita River. The stylish interior of this shop has only counter seating which encircles the kitchen in the center of the room. Unlike the distinctive Sanuki self-service style shops, here, one orders and then takes a seat to wait for the dish. The tako-chikuwa fish sausage here has the great flavor combination with the octopus pieces and is a very popular item. The tako-chikuwa bukkake udon topped with the freshly fried tako-chikuwa is very filling. Don’t miss the signboard and the flags on the highway nearby to find your way to this secluded shop.

This outlandish udon shop is open for only 10 minutes. This shop serves their udon, with the noodles they freshly kneaded and cut in the factory next door, from 12 noon for only 10 minutes. Only udon is on the menu with the two options of either hot or cold. These traditional udon noodles made from a specially blend of two kinds of flour, the Sanuki-no-yume produced in Kagawa, and a discriminatingly selected choice of another flour, have repeatedly been awarded the highest gold award from Monde Selection. Because this is primarily a wholesale business, the store hours are irregular, depending on the manufacturing schedule. It is best to check whether they are open on their SNS before heading there.

This is an udon restaurant along the pilgrimage route to Kotohira Shrine, endearingly called Konpira-san by many. This shop, whose name has become known around the nation, has continued to carry on the tradition of making authentic udon since its inception around the sixties. It is said that Sanuki Konpira udon was brought over from the Tang dynasty in China by Saint Kobo Daishi Kukai long ago. The noodles are known for their distinctive resilience and chewiness, which comes from the painstaking processes of kneading, foot stomping, and hand stretching. The Konpira Udon comes with seven toppings, and its broth is a popular blend of two kinds of soy sauce with a base of dried bonito and kelp. The shop, with its trademark signage and the tanuki raccoon statue, is brimming with character and a sense of history.

This udon restaurant is directly owned and operated by the Nakano Udon School, of national fame and covered by many of the various media. Here, in the surroundings to the gate to Konpira Shrine, visitors can enjoy and appreciate the strength of authentic Sanuki udon noodles. The dignified looking structure which houses the school was built during the Edo period around 1850. This over 150-year-old structure is the oldest wood constructed building in the area around Kotohira Shrine. The shop inside is arranged in the typical Sanuki self-service style. The Shoyu udon, which is plain noodles with straight pure soy sauce, is said by some tourist to be a dish they can never forget. The kake udon with its aromatic light dried sardine broth and the niku-bukkake udon topped with richly flavored meat are both popular variations as well.

Just a 15-minute walk from the Kotohira Station, this soba and udon restaurant is near the stairway leading up to the Konpira Shrine. Here at the shop, facing the pilgrimage main street, visitors can enjoy the wonderful mellow flavor of their soba and udon. This charming shop is said to have been started in the front desk area of the 400-year-old Toraya Ryokan inn. Throughout the inside of the restaurant are old carvings of tigers, and other artwork. Any of the dishes offered on the menu can be made with your choice of soba noodles or udon noodles. The broth, which is not too rich or too light, combines with the softly chewy noodles to make a delicious blend of flavors. There are many customers who pop in to boost their carb intake before the challenging 785 steps up to the shrine.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
