The Shimonoseki Marine Science Museum, affectionately known as “Kaikyokan,” is an aquarium in the Karato district of Shimonoseki City which opened in 2001. The Museum is famous for its collection of over 100 species of Fugu (Pufferfish) from all over the world and for its exhibit of a complete skeleton of a Blue Whale. Must-sees include the “Humboldt Penguin Special Conservation Area,” where visitors can observe a recreation of the habitat of the Humboldt Penguin, which lives in areas with a warm climate, and performances featuring dolphins and sea-lions.

Shimonoseki is famous for puffer fish. But I cant remember seeing so many species of puffer fish in an aquarium. In general, an enjoyable visit.

Yamaguchi Pref. Shimonosekishi Amidaijichou 4-1

The Akama Shrine is dedicated to the Antoku Emperor, whose maternal grandfather was Taira no Kiyomori, and who drowned at the age of eight following the defeat of the Taira Clan in the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The Shrine is located in Amidaiji district, Shimonoseki City. The red-painted Suiten-mon gate (the Shrine’s main gate) which faces Dan-on-ura has magnificent decoration that evokes the supposed appearance of the underwater palace of the Dragon King. The Shrine grounds also contain the Nanamori-zuka (Seven Mounds), dedicated to the Heike (Taira) clan generals who died in the Battle of Dan-no-ura, and a statue of Hoichi, a character in the ghost story “Hoichi the Earless”. The Homotsu-den (Treasure House), for which there is an admission charge, preserves various literary works including a copy of the 20-chapter “Nagatobon Heike Monogatari” which has been designated as an Important Cultural Property, etc. After sunset, the Suiten-mon gate is illuminated, creating a beautiful spectacle which is not to be missed.

It is one of the main attractions in Shimonoseki. I strongly recommend you to visit this shrine. The entrance gate, painted in red and white, is photogenic.

Karato Market is located in Shimonoseki City. Local fishermen and farmers bring their fish, seafood and agricultural produce here to sell it themselves. The Market is a great place for visitors to buy fresh fish caught that same day, and fresh seasonal vegetables. There is also a cafeteria selling sushi and Kaisen-don (rice topped with seafood). The “Iki-iki Bakan-gai” food festival is held at the Karato Market between 10:00 and 15:00 on Fridays and Saturdays and between 8:00 and 15:00 on Sundays and public holidays; this is a lively event with large numbers of people enjoying fish dishes and seafood sold at stalls erected in the Market.

"This is a Roadside Station located on along National Route 191 in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture and is famous for being located at the westernmost point of Honshu. Fresh seafood straight from the fishing port and seasonal produce are available at the ""Houhoku Dream Market"". There is also a restaurant called ""Wakuwakutei"" serving fresh seafood. It is possible to see the sea of Kitaura and Tsunoshima Island from the observation terrace, and many tourists visit the spot."

角島大橋のたもとにある海土ヶ瀬公園から、南へ向かって５ｋｍほど走った、道の右手に、道の駅北浦街道豊北がありました。おみやげ品コーナーが充実している道の駅でした。館内を出ると、裏手（北側）には漁港があり、その向こうには海が広がっていました。少し前まで私たちがいた角島が見えていて、角島大橋もよく見えます。ここからだと、ちょうど橋を横に見る形になるので、その長さが実感できました。

A bridge connecting Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture to the island of Tsunoshima. The bridge is also one of the longest non-toll bridges connecting to an isolated island in Japan. The bridge stretching across the emerald green Amagase sea is lovely, and the area is a popular filming location for television shows and commercials. The expansive view, seemingly out of a country other than Japan, is visited by large numbers of tourists year-round. Note that photography is prohibited in the emergency parking zone in the center of the bridge.

"This is a Soto sect temple in Shimonoseki City and the statue of ""Senju Kannon Bodhisattva"" is revered as the main idol of worship. The temple was established in 1327, and was designated as a national treasure during the Kamakura period (1185–1333) as an example of Zen Buddhist architecture. It is also known as a place of many historical events. There is a statue of Takasugi Shinsaku on horseback in the precincts and the temple loved by history fans."

It is one of the highlights of the sightseeing in Chofu. It is known as the place where Takasugi Shinsaku, an activist of anti Shogunate monument, took up arms.

This shrine, known locally as Seki no Ujigamisama, enshrines Emperor Ojin, Emperor Chuai, Empress Jingu, and Emperor Nintoku. The approximately 12.7-meter-tall gate is made with white granite is famous as the largest in Japan. The grounds also hold the Fuku-no-Zo, a statue of a blowfish, and the charms and ema prayer plaques are also shaped like blowfish.

Kameyama Hachimangu is located on the top of a small hill, and so the view of Kanmon Strait from the shrine is wonderful. Kameyama battery once stood in the precinct of this shrine.

This shrine is known as one of the three biggest Sumiyoshi Shrines in Japan along with the Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fukuoka City and Osaka City. The main shrine is designated as a national treasure, and the hall of worship, built by donations from MOTONARI Mori, is an Important Cultural Property. An annual festival is held from December 8th to 15th , where shimenawa rope is spread all over in the grounds, meaning that general visitors cannot enter, and priests cannot leave and must purify themselves.

The lighthouse was designed in 1876 as the first large lighthouse on the Sea of Japan side, and the view from the top of the narrow spiral staircase is spectacular, almost tropical. Many tourists enjoy driving along the Kakunoshima Ohashi Bridge with this lighthouse as their destination.

角島に渡ってそのまま一気に島の西の端までやってきました。そこに立っているのが角島灯台です。明治９年につくられたという角島灯台は、高さがおよそ３０ｍもあります。その高い灯台のすぐ横に、角島灯台記念館がありました。この灯台記念館は、職員の宿舎だった施設で、館内には、角島の歴史や日本各地にある灯台が紹介されており、また、灯台長の部屋なども復元されて見学することができました。

The Shimonoseki City Art Museum is located in the Chofu district of Shimonoseki City. The Museum has a collection of approximately 2,000 paintings, including both Western and Japanese Nihonga paintings from the early modern and contemporary periods. Besides works by Kano Hogai, an artist born in Chofu who is known as the “Father of Modern Nihonga Painting,” the paintings on display in the Museum also include works by other artists with links to Shimonoseki City, such as Takashima Hokkai and Kazuki Yasuo, as well as the artworks from the Ancient Orient, etc. The Museum holds four to five exhibitions featuring works from its own collections every year, as well as special exhibitions featuring the works of both Japanese and overseas artists.

A Shinto shrine in 1 Chome, Takezaki-cho, Shimonoseki City. This is the place where Minamoto no Yoshitsune prayed for victory at the Battle of Dannoura. It's said to have originated with the worship of a smaller shrine by local fishermen. Honoring the deity of long-lasting good luck in a battle, the flag of the Kiheitai army was also dedicated there in the waning days of the Tokugawa shogunate. The large torii gate and the stairs are lit up at night.

下関駅から徒歩数分の場所に鳥居と石段がありました。この石段を上がって行くと境内となり正面に拝殿と本殿が配され、普段から観光客の参拝を想定した案内も立っていました。境内が少し高台になっている為、本来なら海方向への眺望が開けていたものと思われましたが、現在はビル等の建築物に遮られ最も目立つのが「海峡ゆめタワー」となっていました。

This tunnel connects Shimonoseki City and Kitakyushu City in Fukuoka Prefecture and passes under the Kanmon Strait, separating Yamaguchi and Fukuoka Prefectures. There is a tunnel for pedestrians, bicycles, motorized bicycles of 50 cc or less, which is used as a jogging or walking course. 小ぶりな丘に草木が植えられ、ちょっとした散策に向いています。こじんまりした地味な場所なので高杉晋作を顕彰するような場所をイメージしていると少し違うかもしれません。

This is a small island with a circumference of 17.1 kilometers and is located in the Sea of Japan and is part of Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The 1780 meter long Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge is suspended between Tsunoshima Island and the mainland. Tsunoshima Lighthouse is located at Yumega Cape which is situated in the north-west of the island, and it stands at a height of 29.6 meters.
