Kikko Park is a multi-function park on what was formerly the site of the residence of the Kikkawa family who were the rulers of the Iwakuni Domain, and also the site of the former Yamaguchi Prefectural Iwakuni Upper Secondary School; it has been selected for inclusion in a list of the “Top 100 Most Historic Parks in Japan.” Several buildings of historical importance are located in or near the Park, including the Kikko Shrine, the Ema-do hall “Kin-un-kaku” (a shrine building where votive pictures are hung), and the Mekata Family residence (an Edo period samurai family home), which has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The Park is a wonderful place to view seasonal flowers and tree foliage. Kikko Park is around 20 minutes by bus from Iwakuni Station on the JR Sanyo Main Line.

This is a beautiful park, garden, shrine and koi pond at the base of mountain below the Iwakuni Castle. It is free and serene.

    Yamaguchi Pref. Iwakunishi Iwakuni
Kintaikyo Bridge is ranked as one of Japan’s three most famous bridges, and is a wooden construction with five consecutive arched bridge that span the clear streams of the Nishikigawa River in Iwakuni City. It was built in 1673 by the Iwakuni clan’s lord Kikkawa Hiroyoshi. With a total length of 193 meters and a width of five meters, the bridge has been constructed using timberwork technique involving joints and coupling. Although it was swept away by a typhoon in 1950, it was restored in 1953. There are numerous opportunities to appreciate the scenery in all four seasons such as cormorant fishing during the summer and colorful changing leaves in the autumn, yet the blossoming cherry trees in spring are particularly beautiful, and the area has been designated as one of Japan’s top 100 places to see cherry blossoms.

This museum showing the depth of the bond between Suo-Oshima Town and Hawaii. It exhibits the history of emigrants and materials to know about exchanges with Hawaii currently being conducted. The first time emigrants left Japan was in 1885. It is said that about 30% of the first 944 government-approved emigrants were people from Oshima County. From then until 1923, when emigration was banned, more than one million Japanese emigrated abroad, and their grandchildren extended to fifth and sixth generations. Inside the facility, you can learn about the hardships of the emigrants who crossed the ocean with their dreams and how they established their lives.

  • Iwakuni Castle
    Travel / Tourism
    Yamaguchi Pref. Iwakunishi Yokoyama 3
Kikkawa Hiroie, the first leader of the Iwakuni clan, constructed this castle on the summit of Mt. Yokoyama in 1608. However, due to the “one castle per province” order, it was dismantled a mere seven years later in 1615, and government affairs were carried out in a residence at the base of the mountain. The current castle tower was restored in 1962 based on illustrations and diagrams of the castle tower’s original construction, and offers unbroken views of the Seto Inland Sea area including Kikko Park, Kintaikyo Bridge, the city of Iwakuni and Miyajima. Visitors can also see the stone walls of the former castle tower which have been restored according to the stonework techniques of the time.

This one-story wood building was built during the late Taisho period and within its white plastered walls you can try your hand at making Yanai's traditional Goldfish Paper Lanterns or weaving the Yanai stripe patterned fabric. The building holds a great sense of history and was in fact used as a soy sauce storehouse as late as 1985. The building was reborn as a complex tourist facility in 2001 as a gallery and hands-on workshop. Alongside the hands-on experiences they also hold a variety of exhibitions including photography contests and painting displays.

Yamaguchi Areas

around-area-map

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
