This is a private school which Yoshida Shoin’s uncle, Tamaki Bun’noshin opened in his own home. After which, Shonin’s uncle in law, Kubo Gorozaemon inherited the school and in 1857 Shoin started to preside over the school. The building is small, a single story building made of wood with a tiled roof, and a plaster figure of Shoin, a portrait and his desk sit in the 13.2 meters squared tatami room which was the class room. It is a private school that raised many patriots who became the driving force of the Meiji Restoration such as Takasugi Shinsaku, Ito Hirobumi and Yamagata Aritomo.

Takasugi Shinsaku created the first auxiliary irregular militia in Japan known as Kiheitai which, with its novel idea and dynamism, led to the triumphant victory over the shogunate. The birthplace of Takasugi Shinsaku, the lucky mercenary of the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate, is located in Minamifuruhagi Town, Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Currently, the southern part of the former residence is open to the public. In addition to the well said to be used to give the newborn Shinsaku his first bath and a memorial stone with Shinsaku’s haiku engraved on it, there are a number of artifacts connected with Takasugi Shinsaku on display in the old house. * Because the house is privately owned only viewing from outside is permitted.

The Hagi Uragami Museum is a museum in Hagi City that is dedicated to Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, East Asian ceramics and ceramic art. The Museum was opened in 1996 to house a collection of items donated by businessman Uragami Toshiro (who was born in Hagi); it was awarded two stars in the Michelin Green Guide. There is a tearoom where visitors can enjoy drinking green tea out of Hagi-ware teacups, which is popular as a place to relax while enjoying viewing art at the Museum.

Nice place, nice staff. Be careful though, they say they show the whole collection of Hokusai prints, when in reality, its just one from time to time.

Constructed in 1254, Enseiji Temple has a torii gateway at its entrance—despite being a temple and not a shrine—and this stone torii is a city-designated Tangible Cultural Property. The temple grounds contain the Konpira-sha Hall (a Municipal Tangible Cultural Property) with its statues of the 12 zodiac signs. It is an important location, being a rare example of the syncretism between Buddhism and Shinto. The precincts also contain the rocking -horse (sacred horse) that Shinsaku Takasugi and Hirobumi Ito played with in their youth.

This Rinzai sect Nanzen-ji school temple was built in 1656. The second generation Choshu domain lord, Mori Tsunahiro, ordered it rebuilt from 1654-1656 in order to serve as the family temple, or bodaiji, for his deceased father and first generation Lord Mori Hidenari. Later, in 1747, the temple was destroyed by fire, and it was rebuilt again by the 6th generation lord Munehiro. The main temple, priest quarters, study, shoro bell gate, and kyozo archive sutra repository are all nationally designated Important Cultural Properties. The adjacent Mori clan burial site holds the graves of the even numbered generation domain lords after Hidenari, from the 2nd generation to the 12th generation, along with their families, as well as seven samurai who followed their lord Hidenari into death. The main temple was opened to the public in 2018.

This museum is near the entrance to the Hagi Castle ruins. Its exhibits include several hundred pieces of historically important pottery, including works from official Hagi Domain kilns, early Edo period Matsumoto Kiln pieces, and works from the early Sannose Kiln. Hagi-yaki pottery originated when Korean potters were brought to Hagi after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of the Korean Peninsula, and it prospered as an official service for the lords of the Hagi Domain. This museum displays famous pieces that were found sleeping in the old homes of Hagi and inherited from ancestors, and offers a chance to learn about both Hagi-yaki pottery and local history.

Many of the sculptures with very skillful shapes sculptures were done by 24 artists from eight countries who participated in the 1981 International Sculpture Symposium here. The greenery-embraced grounds have become a popular place for rest and peaceful contemplation with locals, and in spring the blooming azaleas create a beautiful contrast with the lush greenery for a famous local sight.

Yamaguchi Areas

around-area-map

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
