    Izuishi-cho, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture
"A town area located in Izuishi-cho, Toyooka City which has been designated a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. This former castle town, designed using a grid pattern, is also known as the ""Little Kyoto of Tajima."" The area is one of the top soba noodle destinations in the Kansai region, and many soba restaurants stand eve to eve here serving Izuishi soba, a local specialty. Other tourist destinations include the Izuishi Eirakukan, a small performing arts theater established in the Meiji period; museums operating out of former wealthy merchant's residences and other old buildings; and the Shinkoro Clock Tower."

"This section of ancient townscape emerged during the construction of Sasayama Castle. The 600-meter-long street once flourished as the heart of Sasayama and is lined with merchant homes built in a style called ""tsumairi."" These old-fashioned homes were built with narrow frontages around five to eight meters wide but were extremely long and deep, and accordingly were also known as ""eel bed"" houses due to their distinctive shape. Many of the homes have been continuously occupied by residents since the day they were built, but today more and more are being remodeled as shops and other establishments. Features such as vertical timber latticework, wing walls, and short ridgepole support pillars are distinctive of Edo period architecture, and the area has been designated a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings."

This historic district consists of the National Historic Site-designated ruins of Sasayama Castle and surrounding former samurai and merchant neighborhoods. Spanning 1,500 meters east to west and 600 meters north to south, the district occupies around 40.2 hectares of land and encompasses an area where much of the basic structure of an original early modern period castle town still remains. Situated near the border with Kyoto, Sasayama has flourished since ancient times as a key point connecting Kyoto and the San'in and San'yo regions. The district is famous nationwide for its excellently preserved townscape consisting of the ruins of a castle built as part of the national Tenka Bushin public works system, and samurai and merchant home neighborhoods. The district has been designated a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings and has also been selected for inclusion in the 100 Historic Features of Japan list and awarded the Urban Landscape Prize (Urban Space Category).

Hyogo prefecture stretches from the north coast to the south coast on the western end of the popular Kansai region, encompassing verdant mountains, urban beaches, and fantastic historical sights. The prefecture’s main attractions lie along the south coast at Kobe, the prefectural capital, a pretty harbor city best known for its production of the renowned Kobe beef, and Himeji, the home of Himeji Castle, one of the country’s most beautifully preserved feudal castles, perched magically atop a hill.
