Kishiwada Castle is located in Kishiki-cho, in Kishiwada City. Kishiwada Castle, also known as Chikiri Castle, is said to have been built by Wada Takaie, a relative of Kusunoki Masashige. The castle tower was built in 1585, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi's grandfather, Koide Hidemasa, began to expand the castle. The current three-tier / three-story castle tower was built in 1954, after the previous five-story burned down when it was struck by lightning in 1827. During the time of the Meiji Restoration, with the tower and gate destroyed, only the moat and stone walls still stood. In 1943, the site was designated as a historical site by Osaka Prefecture, and in 2014, Kishiwada Castle Garden (Hachijin no Niwa) was designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty. It is also a famous flower-viewing spot.

After visiting many castles in Japan, it was a pleasure to visit one with an intimate feel. There are some exhibits on a couple of floors, but not enough to make it feel more like a museum than a...

This park in Sakai City is located 15 minutes' walk from Mozu Station, near the mausoleum of Emperor Nintoku. This heavily symbolic park is steeped in nature and history. Within the park are open greens, a gourd-shaped pond, children forest, museum, tea house, Japanese gardens and many other fascinating places to visit. The park was selected to be included in Japan's top 100 historical parks list. Near the gourd-shaped pond, approximately 400 various types of cherry tree have been planted, including Yoshino cherry trees and Oshima cherry trees. When in full bloom, the whole area is painted a beautiful florid pink. The park's hill and pond circuit-style garden is also a popular place for locals to relax.

I came here during autumn season, the best spot in this park was the Japanese garden. Looking at huge number of cherry trees, I believe it will be a good spot during cherry blossom season in...

This seaside park stretches out across the coast opposite Kansai International Airport. The park itself is divided into two areas, Symbol Garden and Seaside Garden. On the Symbol Garden side, there are rock gardens with seasonal flowers and an inland sea cove. The inland sea cove is especially popular with children, as they can touch the sea water there, so parents often visit it with their children. On the Seaside Garden side, the main attraction is the long pebble covered marble beach. The landscape is particularly beautiful at night, and the beach is also used as a venue for cosplay competitions and the Rinku fireworks festival.

Locals call the deity of this shrine Mr. Hochigai. It has been here for many years, and has long guided them on matters of orientation, the land and Feng Shui, so they don't build in inauspicious ways. The shrine is located in Sakai City, on the north side of Emperor Hansei's tomb, and was once a way-point on the Kumano pilgrimage. Many Kumano pilgrims would pray here for a safe journey. An annual festival is held at the shrine every year on May 31st. Worshippers who have offered up an earthen-wrapped chimaki (steamed rice dumpling) to this deity receive a chimaki sweet on the day of the festival.

In Ancient and Medieval Japan, they used to believe that leaving for the right direction is very important especially when you make a long journey or move to another house. Hochigai literally...

This museum is dedicated to land development history, with the dyke and unearthed cultural assets from Japan's oldest dammed reservoir, the historic Sayamaike. The dam was designed by architect Tadao Ando. The first thing to draw visitors' eyes is the permanent exhibition of a cross section of the dyke, which was created using the Shikiha koho method of construction, in the Asuka period. A 15-meter high and 60-meter wide section of the dyke was reconstructed for the exhibition, so the stratum of 1,400 years since the dyke's construction can be clearly seen. A place of lifelong learning, there are also many special exhibits and items of interest in the museum.

This temple is located in Mizuma, Kaizuka City. While it is commonly called Mizuma Kannon, its official name is Mizuma-dera Temple. According to legend, the temple was built by Gyoki, on Emperor Shomu's orders. The temple's name comes from the meeting of the Kogi River, flowing down from Mt. Katsuragi, and the Kibitani tributary River. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1811, with the temple having been razed multiple times by the fires of war. The principle object of worship in the temple is a Kannon that drives away misfortune. The Shogatsu Hoe and Senbon Mochitsuki festivals, which are held every New Year, are designated Intangible Cultural Properties of Kaizuka City.
