This temple began when third generation shogun of the Muromachi shogunate Ashikaga Yoshimitsu inherited the Saionji family's mountain villa and called the villa “Kitayamadono.” After his death it was changed into a Zen temple named “Rokuonji.” The reliquary hall is a three-story building shining beautifully in gold and looks pretty reflected in the Kyokoike (mirror pond). This brilliant architecture was a symbol of Kitayama culture but burned down in a 1950 fire, then was rebuilt in 1955. In 1994 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was nice to sit quietly and have a bowl of matcha tea and a sweet while finishing our visit at kinkaku-ji. It wasnt busy at all despite the huge crowds at the temple and the tea was lovely.

"A two minute walk from Omuro-Ninnaji Station and the ""Ninnaji-mae"" bus stop. This Buddhist temple, immediately east of the Ninnaji Temple, boasts a long history as a special head temple of the Shingon Omuro Buddhist faith. The temple was founded in 1057 and moved to its current location in 1928. The temple is the 15th temple on the Kinki 36 Fudo Pilgrimage. The temple was rebuilt in 1641 many years after it was destroyed and it was at this time that the temple's stone statue of the five wisdom Buddhas were completed; these statues still attract many faithful today. The temple holds a homa ritual at 11:00 a.m. on the 28th of the month and, on ""Doyo-ushinohi"" in July, a ""cucumber-sealing"" ritual in which cucumbers are used to pray for recovery from chronic illnesses."

A Buddhist temple located to the left of Narabigaoka Hill to the west of JR Hanazono Station. Originally the mountain retreat of Minister of the Right Kiyohara no Natsuno in the early Heian period, in 1130 it was restored as the Taikenmon-in by the wife of retired emperor Toba. The temple was then destroyed in the Onin War and then rebuilt by Shochin of the Sennyu-ji Temple in 1617. The temple houses a great number of Buddhist statues, paintings, and crafts. The Fujiwara period seated figure of Amitabha, the temple’s principal object of worship and a designated Important Cultural Property, is particularly worthy of note. In summer, some 90 varieties of sacred lotus bloom on the temple’s grounds, and thus the temple is also known as the “Lotus Temple.” The arrangement of the stones which make up Ao’onna-no-taki, Japan’s oldest artificial waterfall, creates a stunning sight, and the temple’s garden is designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.

Torin-in Temple is one of the sub temples of Myoshinji Temple. It was constructed by Hosokawa Ujitsuna for his father’s memorial service. In the garden is a 300-year-old sal tree, best viewed in June when there is the “Sal Appreciation Gethering.” It is not normally open to the public.

A cafe located between Omuro Ninnaji Temple and Myoshinji Temple. Their menu is a relaxed affair that's easy on the body and very popular. They use non GMO soybeans and an antioxidant oil that prevents heartburn. They offer two different lunch plate options, one with grated yam and the other with okara soy pulp croquettes, both of which come with five grain rice. Their side dish menu includes tofu skin and tofu and they also offer daily cakes and drinks.

Located approximately five minutes on foot from JR Sagano Line’s Hanazono Station, this restaurant was founded in 1962 as a purveyor for Myoshin-ji Temple, and is located in front of the gate to Myoshin-ji Temple. The tatami floor seating area has an appearance of elegant simplicity with decorations of calligraphy by priests and Zen paintings on the fusuma. The menu is based on shojin ryori (traditional vegetarian Buddhist cuisine) and guests can enjoy a multi-course style shojin ryori banquet which uses seasonal ingredients. The Fuchidaka Bento lunch, which is limited to the lunch-time only menu, is recommended. Here one can enjoy true shojin ryori that is beautifully arranged with the vegetables in season that month all at reasonable prices.

Located in Kyoto's Ukyo Ward near Ninnaji Temple, Omuro Sanowa is a cafe focused on Japanese tea. The atmosphere is dignified and mature, with modern and stylish interior decor and large screens made of washi paper. The cafe serves seven varieties of tea from Japan and other countries, and each cup is brewed individually, using Kyoto's famous water. The most popular sweets eaten with tea are Viennese baked sweets and azuki rolled cake. Tea leaves and carefully chosen variety goods are favorite Kyoto souvenirs.

Goshitsu Sanowa is a very pleasant little place to visit for tea and desserts. The desserts were elegantly simple and delicious.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
