    Kyoto Yawatashi Yawata Takabou 30
Considered one of the greatest Hachiman shrines, Shinto shrines dedicated to Hachiman, in the country, this shrine was established in 859 when the deity of Usa Hachimangu in Kyushu was ceremonially divided and transferred here to protect an Imperial castle built in southwestern Heian-kyo (the former name of the city of Kyoto), considered an unlucky area due to the tenets of feng shui. Today, believers come to the shrine for protection from evil and calamity, and has come to be affectionately known as “Yawata no Hachiman-sama.” The Shrine’s vermillion-lacquered main building was rebuilt with donations from Tokugawa Iemitsu in the Edo period, and it, together with structures such as the inner shrine, outer shrine, two tier gate, are all registered as Important Cultural Property.

The main building is designated as a National Treasure a couple of years ago. This is the home of Hachiman shrines which spreads all over Japan. I bought a good luck charm years ago and it was so...

    Kyoto Yawatashi Yawata Ominaeshi 43-1
This garden art museum is associated with Shokado Shojo, who was the priest of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture in the beginning of the Edo period (1603-1868). Works tied to Shojo are on display. In addition, the Shokado Garden is where you can enjoy cultural assets that are national historical sites and scenic spots such as Soan Shokado and Izumi-bo Shoin along with the scenery of the four seasons. Also known as the birthplace of the Shokado Bento lunch box, you can eat it while watching the garden from Kyoto Kitcho Shokado Store on site.

This is a Coca Cola West factory in Kumiyama-cho, Kuse-gun, Kyoto Prefecture. Each day they hold a free to reserve Magical Factory Tour. On the tour one can see the canned coffee production line (Georgia) and enjoy learning about the history and production process behind Coca Cola. It takes around 90 minutes to see everything. There is also a free drink corner and a corner selling original goods.

    Kyoto Yawata-shi Yawatababa 88-1
This temple is connected to Yoshiko, the birth mother of the third Ashikaga shogun Yoshimitsu. It began in 1257 when a clerk for Iwashimizu Hachimangu, Zenpoji Miyakiyo, donated his own home to serve as priest's quarters. The main temple, built with materials from the former shrine building at Iwashimizu Hachimangu, and the Kouraimon front gate are registered Kyoto Prefecture cultural assets. Yoshimitsu's mother Yoshiko donated a number of maple trees, earning this temple the nickname Momiji-dera (maple leaf temple). There are still several hundred maple trees here, and the fresh green of spring and red leaves of fall make it a sightseeing spot in both seasons.

This temple is about ten minutes' walk from Yawatashi Station on the Keihan main line, and is also known as Rakugaki-dera (graffiti temple). Directly facing the sanmon main gate is the Daikoku-do hall, also called Rakugaki-do because they say that if you write your prayer on the white walls, it will be answered. Stories tell that the building was built out of gratitude to the deity Daikokuten, with white walls so that the spirit could better see the prayers written on them. The walls are quickly packed with prayers and wishes, but every New Year's Day they are repainted while. Please be aware that visits are only open on Saturdays and Sundays.

This Japanese restaurant is about a five minute walk from Oshiba-Shokado bus stop on the Kehan Bus. They offer dining in a glass lined room with a view of the Shokado Garden from airy table seating, or low tatami mat seating. The quiet, relaxing Japanese style private rooms are highly recommended for celebrations, memorials or religious events. The food is based around the chakaiseki style with multi-course meals of sashimi, hassun side dishes, grilled fish or meat, and pickles, but does not allow the flavors and aromas to mix. Instead, they serve cold and hot dishes together in well divided compartments as part of a Shokado Bento box.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
