This regular handicraft market event is held every fourth Sunday of the month. The venue is found along a stream, on the grounds of the Important Cultural Asset Kamigamo-jinja shrine. There are about 250 shops, selling a wide variety of items like accessories, fabric knickknacks, pottery, woodcarving, fresh produce, baked goods and bread. This event's biggest feature is the venue, surrounded by beautiful natural scenery and historic, culturally valuable buildings. Since it takes place on Sundays, it's not unusual to see brides and grooms in the midst of Shrine Weddings.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
