A Soto Buddhist temple which is also regarded as one of the three great Inari Shinto shrines in Japan. The official name of the temple is the Toyokawakaku Myogon-ji, but it is popularly called the Toyokawa Inari. The nickname derives from the temple’s figure of a Buddhist Dakini spirit, which sits astride a white fox and carries an ear of rice, symbols of the Inari Okami, the god of foxes. The temple was built in the Muromachi period and came to be worshipped by the common people in the Edo period for purportedly blessing people with thriving businesses, good fortune, and peace and prosperity in the home. One of the highlights of the temple is the “fox mound” found on its grounds, which is covered with countless statues of foxes donated by worshippers. Restaurants in the neighborhood around the temple serve Toyokawa Inari-zushi fried tofu sushi rolls.

I recommend this place for people who love foxes. It also has a beautiful garden with a pond inside. Highly recommended. BE CAREFUL of the TRAINS if you are going to take one. There are two train...

Considered one of Japan’s 100 most famous castles, Okazaki Castle is famous as the birthplace of the mighty shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. After the Battle of Okehazama, Ieyasu re-took the castle from the Imagawa clan and achieved independence. Thereafter, Ieyasu moved his base of operations to Hamamatsu Castle in 1570. Until he defeated the Toyotomi clan at the Battle of Osaka in 1615, Tanaka Yoshimasa, a member of the Toyotomi clan, was the lord of the castle. After Ieyasu unified the country, high status hereditary daimyo lords, whose families had supported Ieyasu, inherited the lordship of the castle. Inside the castle, each floor contains displays of historical materials focusing on a different theme. From the observation room, visitors can get a sweeping view of Okazaki. The old fashioned exterior of this aquarium speaks of its long history; inside, you’ll find some 4,500 marine creatures comprised of 500 species. The aquarium displays both freshwater and seawater life. Many of the informational cards and posters in the aquarium were hand-written by the staff themselves. Visitors appreciate the easy-to-understand content. The aquarium also goes to efforts to routinely change the content of their exhibits. The cute sea lion shows are popular with adults as well as children.

This place was a great surprise. The vast collection of marine life here was unbelievable. ¥500 for adults. The touching pool was better than any Ive seen at any aquarium worldwide. Well done.

This shrine honors the Shinto deity Susanoo no mikoto. With connections to the god Gozu Tenno, it's been favored by warriors since the days of old. The shrine is nationally famous on account of July's Toyohashi Gion Festival. The celebration features a variety of events, including participants setting off hand held temochi-hanabi. These bamboo cylinders packed with gun powder held aloft erupt in a fountain of spark and flame. There's also an enormous fireworks display, a portable shrine event where parishioners transfer its Shinto god from one place to another, Sasa odori dance performances with participants in scarlet costumes, and the Yoritomo Parade which re-enacts a procession of the warlord Minamoto no Yoritomo.

A very nice shrine. The grounds are well kept and the area has a nice spacious feel too it. You can access from several places. Though I think the best one is from Nawate street through the large...

Aichi Areas

around-area-map

Aichi is a prefecture of great natural beauty with Nagoya city at its heart, a busy hub home to a labyrinth of underground shops and the 17th-century Nagoya Castle. Castles are easy to find in this history-rich prefecture, but the highlight for history buffs has to be the Museum Meiji-mura, where preserved buildings from the turn of the 20th century are displayed in all their grandeur in an outdoor museum.
