    Shizuoka Hamamatsu-shi Chuo-ku Maisakacho Maisaka 2091
This is the site of the only waki-honjin sub-inn for government officials on the former Tokaido road. The Myogaya sub-inn was built in 1838 in the post station town of Maisaka-juku, the 30th station on the Tokaido counting from Edo; the sub-inn's shoin or study building, which has a jodan-no-ma room with a raised floor, still stands today. Maisaka-juku was once the location of the landing for the Imagire Ferry, which connected the post station towns on the east and west sides of the Tokaido. Records state that in the Taisho period (1912-1926), the former sub-inn was used as a government hall. The area's original townscape no longer remains, but after disassembly and repair work conducted in 1997, the sub-inn's main building and other structures were restored and made open to the general public.

    Shizuoka Hamamatsu-shi Tenryu-ku Futamatacho Akura 114-2
This tour is conducted by the Tenryu Hamanako Line, a local Shizuoka train line. Participants can tour Tenryu-Futamata Station's old railway turntable and the Railway Historical Museum. Railway turntables were facilities used during the time of steam locomotives to change the direction a train was running using a large rotating turntable. Today, electric and diesel trains which can run in either direction are common, but a turntable and railway roundhouse is still maintained at Tenryu-Futamata Station for visitors to view up close. In the Railway Historical Museum, you can see rare examples of tools and equipment actually used during the time of the Japanese National Railways Futamata Line, the predecessor to the current Tenryu Hamanako Line. Tours are held daily but tour start times vary by day, so be sure to check in advance.

    Shizuoka Hamamatsu-shi Chuo-ku Shijimizuka 4-22-1
This park is built around the National Historic Site-designated Shijimizuka Archaeological Site. The park grounds encompass recreations of the kind of Jomon period homes which once stood here in ancient times; and the Takayama Family Residence, an Edo period home. The Shijimizuka Archaeological Site, which makes up the core of the park, is the site of a village which existed from the late to the end of the Jomon period (approximately 4,000 years ago to 3,000 years ago). The locations of homes, graves, and shell mounds have been discovered in the area, primarily in what is now maintained as an open field in the park. One of the shell mounds is preserved in the same state as when human bones were discovered in it, and visitors can see the mound's accumulated seashells and other relics beyond a glass window. The lush park is also widely used by local residents as a space for rest and relaxation.

"Records state this ancient Soto Buddhist temple was founded in 810 during the Heian period. The temple was originally a Shingon Buddhist temple which bore the honorary mountain name of ""Chureizan,"" but after the Meiji period movement to expel Buddhism, the temple's honorific mountain name was changed to ""Akihasan"" and the temple itself became the Soto Buddhist temple it is today. Located in the deepest reaches of the local hot spring district, the temple's principal object of worship is a statue called the ""Fukuichi Akasagarbha."" A Kshitigarbha (Jizo) statue stands on the east side of the main temple which is called the Enmusubi Jizo and which is believed to bring luck in finding love and marriage. The shelter around the statue is covered with ema votive tablets, hung by worshippers, which are decorated with the Japanese character for ""heart"" and an image of a lock, a design the temple has used on its ema since ancient times."

It was rebuilt early in the Meiji Period, but part of it exhibits construction styles that were common in the Edo Period. The city has designated it a Tangible Cultural Property. This valuable building even offers visitors views of landscapes that have changed little since the old days.

    Shizuoka Hamamatsu-shi Chuo-ku Shikatanicho 25-10
This museum is located one kilometer north of Hamamatsu Castle. Here, visitors can learn about the Battle of Mikatagahara as well as the Enshu Dai-Nenbutsu, a folk entertainment native to Shizuoka Prefecture. The museum's grounds encompass the 116-meter-long, 30-meter-wide, 13-meter-deep Saigagake cliff valley. Records state the valley is the site where Tokugawa Ieyasu, who experienced a crushing defeat at the hands of Takeda Shingen in 1572 in the Battle of Mikatagahara, executed a night raid on Takeda's forces in retaliation. According to legend, Ieyasu devised a plan to drive away Takeda's army one way or another, hanging a white cloth from the cliff; confused and in disarray due to Ieyasu's night attack, the Takeda army mistakenly saw the cloth as a bridge and both men and horses tumbled into the valley when they tried to cross it.

    Shizuoka Hamamatsu-shi Tenryu-ku Yamahigashi 2873
This ancient Buddhist temple was founded by the noted priest Gyoki in 717 during the Nara period. The temple enshrines a statue of Daikokuten (Mahakala) which is believed to be one of the largest in the country. The four-meter-high statue was carved from a single Japanese cedar tree. The temple's grand Hatsukinoene Festival is held on the third Sunday in January each year and it is said that using a new wallet after attending will result in improved luck, protection from misfortune, and business prosperity. From the temple's inner sanctuary, located a 10-minute hike up a mountain from the main temple complex, you can get a sweeping view of Hamamatsu City. The temple is also famous for its shikizakura cherry trees, which bloom in winter and create a beautiful contrast with the area's delayed fall foliage.

A temple in Nakagawa, Hosoe Town, Hamana-ku, Hamamatsu City. As it is the temple of an Obaku school of Zen Buddhism, opened in 1664, it is one of the Kohoku Gozan along with the Makayaji Temple, Daifuku Temple, Hokoji Temple, and Ryotanji Temple. With an architectural style adopted from the Chinese Ming Dynasty, the Buddhist sanctum and abbot chamber have been designated as National Important Cultural Properties. When the precinct's kinmeiseki is struck, it rings out with a clear sound, so the temple is considered to be good for improving financial fortune.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
