  • Ito Marine Town Rest Area

    This rest area situated along National Route 135 in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture is comprised of a group of colorful buildings facing the sea. Inside, the facility bustles constantly with tourists, and visitors will find restaurants where they can enjoy local fish and beer as well as souvenir shops offering an abundant variety of local Izu goods. Many of the facility’s restaurants allow visitors to be accompanied by their pets in terrace seating areas, making this rest area a popular destination for tourists traveling with their dogs. The rest area’s footbath, situated along the marina, is free to use, and there’s even a footbath area for dogs. Pleasure cruises departing from the arena give riders the chance to enjoy the sights of the Izu sea from the deck or via windows under the water line. The rest area’s day trip hot spring facility is also popular.
  • Jogasaki Coast

    This coastal area southwest of Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture was formed some 4,000 years ago when Mt. Omuro erupted and lava flowed into the ocean, after which the waves eroded the rock over many years, creating rough and precipitous cliffs. There is a nine kilometer long “Picnical Course” hiking trail following the peninsula renowned as a key sightseeing destination in Izu. Notable locations along the course include the thrilling 48 meter long, 23 meter high Kadowaki Suspension Bridge and the Kadowakisaki Lighthouse, which also has a viewing platform for visitors. In addition to offering beautiful views of the Seven Islands of Izu, the area is also a popular diving spot.

    Tokaikan Former Ryokan was built in 1928. This is a three-storey wooden hot spring ryokan (Japanese inn) which retains strong traces of the architectural style of the early Showa period. The building was donated to Ito City after the ryokan closed in 1997, and in 2001 it was transformed into a sightseeing and cultural establishment. The fine techniques of craftsmanship on such as the corridor, stairs, the entrance to the guest rooms and the decorative windows are a must-see. The baths are open for bathing on weekends and public holidays.

    Almost Showa style hotel will be rebult new western style hotel, but it was restored to remain old style using old materials. Having Supa in the restaurant and easy to try the Spa.

    This is a private art museum located in Ito City, Shizuoka which focuses on 20th century contemporary art. This museum was established in 1975 by Eiichi Ikeda, the founder of NICHIREKI CO.,LTD. It has a collection of approximately 1,400 works of fine art and sculptures created in the 20th century with an emphasis on the theme of “human”; it also possesses works by famous painters including Renoir, Bonnard and Picasso. If you get in touch in advance, the curator or a member of staff will explain about a piece of work.

    A museum located a 10 minute walk from Izu-Kogen Station designed around the concept of a “teddy bear house.” The museum features numerous displays, including “Teddy Girl,” an early teddy bear produced by the German Steiff firm which is also listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, rare antique bears, and works by teddy bear makers from around the world. The brick exhibition hall is modeled after an English country home. There’s also a courtyard filled with cute bears and a tea room with comfortable terrace seating, giving visitors the chance to enjoy a truly fairy tale-like atmosphere.

    There is not much to view. Less than 30 mins you can finish this museum. I don't think the ticket worth the money. But if you traveled to Izukogen with children, you could give it a chance. The...

  • Sakura no Sato

    A 40 thousand square meter park located at the foot of Mt. Omuro in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Some 40 varieties of cherry trees are planted on the park’s spacious grounds. In front of majestic Mt. Omuro, they bloom one after the next in succession each year—jugatsu-zakura to start in mid-September, followed by kan-zakura, Ito-zakura, somei Yoshino, shidare-zakura, and finally Sanokiku in May. The Sakura Museum on the park grounds introduces the cherry varieties planted in the park and exhibits photos of famous cherry blossom viewing locations and cherry trees from around the country. The Sakura no Sato Festival is held in early April at the height of cherry blossom season, and during this time the park bustles with great throngs of visitors come to hold traditional cherry blossom viewing parties.

    A tourist attraction in Shizuoka Prefecture’s Ito City located at Jogasaki Coast which is famous for its precipitous cliffs, this suspension bridge hangs over the ocean at a height of 23 meters with a length of 48 meters. Known as a place where many suspenseful dramas have been filmed, the bridge is the most popular part of the Jogasaki Picnical Course walking path. The bridge’s strong construction notwithstanding, viewing the rough, whitewater of the pounding waves right below one’s eyes from the bridge makes for a thrilling experience. In the vicinity is the Kadowaki Lighthouse and observatory which offers outstanding views.

    This is a memorial museum for Mokutaro Kinoshita, who was born in Ito City’s Yukawa and was active in a wide variety of fields including medicine, literature, poetry, and art. The mud-walled construction of the building, which is characteristic for its Namako-kabe walls (walls covered with square tiles jointed with raised plaster) is a restoration of the home in which Mokutaro was born. In addition to displaying the first editions of Mokutaro’s poetry and plays, paintings, and notes that he wrote as a student, visitors can also catch a glimpse at life in his day through the daily implements from people in his birthplace as well as the Ota house. It is approximately five minutes on foot from Ito Station.

    This antique jewelry museum in Yawatano, Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture, displays jewelry and dresses mainly from the Victorian period. Many of the exhibits are from the 19th century when capitalists flourished due to their wealth from the colonies. You can see a number of precious items such as a Tiffany pendant, a tiara with 620 diamonds, and a delicately crafted cameo. There is also a space where you can try on some antique style dresses and have your photograph taken.

    The Nosaka Automata Museum is an art museum located in Yawatano, Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture, which stores and displays antique ‘automata’ dolls that can move by mechanical means. Automata produced by European watch makers in the 18th and 19th centuries are works of art that use one spring as its driving force without using any electrical power. In addition to the exhibition of a number of valuable automata that would have attracted aristocrats of the day, there is also a corner which shows, several times a day, the automata in action.

    Located about six minutes on foot from Izu-Kogen Station, this museum focusing on antique music boxes has about 130 items including mechanical instruments such as self-playing pianos and pipe organs, and gramophones. Mechanical instruments, precious cylinder music boxes and disk music boxes come to life and play in the museum eight times a day. You can enjoy the beautiful sounds of these music boxes as well learning about the more than 200 year old history of these fascinating instruments. There is also a workshop where you can have a go at making your very own handcrafted music box. Small pets are allowed into the museum provided they are carried.

    Located in a perfect location overlooking the sea is this stained glass museum in Kawana, Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. With a church and chapel contained within, there is precious stained glass from the 19th century given by the UK to be found throughout the building. The museum is a glorious space in which the soul is soothed by the rays of sunshine pouring through the stained glass windows, the soft light of the lamps and by the scent of the incense. Unexpected moments can be enjoyed while listening to the sounds of the music box and pipe organ. On site is an Italian restaurant run by chef Yukio Ishizaki and also a wedding venue.

    The white Kadowakisaki lighthouse with observation deck is one of the sightseeing highlights of the popular Jogasaki Coast in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. With a total height of 24.9 meters, the first observation deck sits at 17 meters high and the second at four meters. As well as being a popular spot for photographs, on clear days it is also a fabulous scenic spot with views of the distant Izu Shichito Islands and the Amagi Mountains. The lighthouse is also situated right next door to the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge where you can experience the thrill of precipitous cliffs.

    Shogetsuin Temple is a temple of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism and is situated on a hill about five minutes’ walk from Ito Station. The temple is also known as Hana-dera (flower temple) or Sakura-dera (cherry blossom temple) because of the many cherry trees planted there, including the rare higan (early-flowering) cherry tree. The temple is famous for its spectacular views overlooking Ito City and the sea. It is also the family temple and birthplace of Mokutaro Kinoshita, a literary man from Ito. In the beautifully maintained gardens are a slab with a haiku engraved onto it and a writing-brush burial mound, and in the lake next to the main temple is Bentendo Hall devoted to the goddess Saraswati. It is one of the stops on the tour of the Seven Deities of Good Fortune.

    Jewelpia is a museum focusing on ivory carvings and natural jewels, located in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The importing of ivory is currently prohibited under the Washington Convention. The museum is known to be a valuable art museum throughout the world. The museum houses about 270 exhibits all of which are national treasures, including about 120 ivory carvings from China, a jade sculpture, folding screens studded with jewels, and art works from Asia. Another must-see in the museum is the world’s largest natural folding screen inlaid with more than 1,500 precious stones. There is also an area where visitors can have a go at making their own bracelets and gel candles.

    Yawatano Kiln in Izukogen Taiken no Sato on Higashi Izu Road in Yawatano, Izu City is a pottery-making interactive facility. It is one of the largest scale interactive facilities in Kanto Region as it has 32 electric wheels and 120 hand-forming seats. Popular hands-on activities such as electric wheels and hand-forming are available without a booking. In addition, it offers a range of interactive programs including an underglaze painting experience, etching art and lamp shade making in which lamp holes are made pre-shaped lamp shades.
