This cliff valley is located around one kilometer north of Hamamatsu Castle. Open to the public, the 116-meter-long, 30-meter-wide, 13-meter-deep valley and the surrounding area are known as the Mikatagahara Ancient Battlefield, which records state is the site where Tokugawa Ieyasu, who experienced a crushing defeat at the hands of Takeda Shingen in 1572 in the Battle of Mikatagahara, executed a night raid on Takeda's forces in retaliation. According to legend, Ieyasu devised a plan to drive away Takeda's army one way or another, hanging a white cloth from the cliff; confused and in disarray due to Ieyasu's night attack, the Takeda army mistakenly saw the cloth as a bridge and both men and horses tumbled into the valley when they tried to cross it.

"The Atago River, a part of the Tenryu River system, is one of the best firefly habitats in Hamamatsu City. Each year from early to late June, visitors can watch the beautiful dances traced out by the lights of fireflies. A ""firefly school"" event is held in early June in which local residents teach visitors about the ecology of fireflies and conservation activities. Participants can get an in-depth understanding of these insects which have now become a rare sight in Japan. During firefly season, visitors must pay an environmental conservation cooperation fee; funds are used to preserve environments in which fireflies can live."

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
