This Gujo store sells its own brand of geta, Japanese wooden clogs. Known as “Odori-geta, they're used in Gujo-Hachiman's famous local dance, the Gujo-odori. The store is particular about making them with quality hinoki cypress from the mountains around Gujo. Their clogs are cut whole from single pieces of wood, so they won't break even if you dance the night away on stone pavement. The shop also has a selection of colorful thongs for customizing them as you like, available in a variety of materials ranging from silkscreen prints to antique cloth.

This shop in Gifu Prefecture operated by Furukawa Shiko, a paper maker founded in 1835, is located a 15-minute walk from Nagaragawa Railway Minoshi Station. Located inside of a 70 year-old paper warehouse, it carries a wide range of unique and thoughtfully-designed items made with Mino washi paper. This includes Soebumi-Sen, letter sets created with a concept of conveying your feelings with the world’s shortest letter. It also includes Omoide Shuincho, a smooth-writing and quick-drying notebook for collecting shuin stamps from shrines and temples. It also includes their Mino Washi Socks, which are made with warm Mino washi yarn.

Gifu Areas

around-area-map

Tucked away in the very center of Japan, Gifu prefecture houses mountains, old towns, and one of Japan’s greatest hot springs, Gero Onsen. A tour of the prefecture’s traditional architecture will take you from the mountain-enveloped wooden streets of Takayama to the mountain village of Shirakawago, where visitors can explore 250-year-old thatched roofed houses known as gassho-zukuri.
