A museum located in Nagamachi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture which displays materials related to the life and work of “ashigaru,” common foot soldiers who existed during the era of Japan’s feudal domains. The museum consists of two wood longhouses used as ashigaru barracks which were moved to this site. The hedge, trees and other plants, and distinctive roof with stones placed on top all replicate how the facility would have looked when used to house ashigaru. Inside, visitors will find exhibits presenting life goods and furnishings used at the time, providing a glimpse into the foods ashigaru ate, the side work they engaged in to occupy their time, and other aspects of their everyday life.

I walked around the Nagamachi (samurai) district and found three other houses that were open to the public free of charge which I enjoyed much more than the Nomura Samurai house. One of them was the...

A museum located in Naga-machi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture housed inside a relocated building which once belonged to Nakaya Yakuho, a long-standing medicine company which was established in 1579. The building, an extremely valuable cultural property, was originally built in 1878 on the occasion of a visit by Emperor Meiji and the exterior remains unchanged from that time. Inside, visitors will find a recreation of the “mise no ma” parlor used by Nakaya Yakuho to serve customers during Japan’s feudal domain era. The second floor serves as an exhibition space displaying materials related to the culture of the merchants who once lived in Kanazawa, traditional wedding implements, and everyday tools once used by shops of old in the area.

On our tour of the Naga-machi district area we were invited into this museum by a lovely man. The museum only costs 100yen which is way too little for all the things that shows:a perfect...

The Nagamachi Samurai District is a popular tourist destination in Nagamachi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture; a gate called the Nagaya-mon Gate stands in a corner of the district. The gate is the entrance to the Takada Family Residence; the Takada family were once feudal retainers of the former Kaga Domain who received 550 koku of rice annually. Today, the Nagaya-mon Gate has been restored to its original state and the residence is open to the public. A traditional circular garden built around a central pond stands on the residence’ grounds which is dotted with Japanese red pines and a meandering stream fed by the Onosho Irrigation Channel also flows through the garden. Other highlights include the servants’ quarters, stable, and workshop. The residence is a valuable site which offers visitors a glimpse of the life of a samurai family during Japan’s feudal domain era.

The Samurai house nearby was absolutely swamped, while this free attraction was empty. I found it charming and it gave some insights into the life of the lower class (they wore the cast-off clothing...

A history museum dedicated to the Maeda Tosanokami family, a clan started by the samurai Maeda Toshimasa, son of Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of Kaga Domain. The family, of honorable origin and closely affiliated with the domain-ruling Maeda clan, is counted as one of the eight primary families which underpinned and supported the domain. Over the generations, members of the Maeda Tosanokami clan were awarded many important positions, and the family accumulated some 9,000 articles of tremendous historical value, a portion of which are on display in this museum. The museum's impressive exhibits include suits of armor and swords as well as texts detailing the history of famous military commanders from Japan's Warring States period.

Even though the museum is pretty much all in Japanese, the artifacts are still interesting and they tried hard to provide translations to as much of the exhibit as they could. The staff were kind...

This Kaga Yuzen dyeing studio is operated by Chibeni, a dyer established some 200 years ago during the early Edo period. Here visitors can see a variety of Kaga Yuzen kimono and other craft articles made by Ikko Teranishi, the seventh head of a Kaga Yuzen dyeing family; in addition, visitors can also try actual Yuzen dyeing themselves. The facility also has a shop where you can purchase original and exclusive Yuzen-dyed items.

The exhibits may seem faded and old, but they show an age old tradition and beauty that is the very essence of Japan. The silks are beautiful.

"A tourist information facility located in the Nagamachi Samurai District in Kanazawa City where visitors can take a break and go to the bathroom. Although built with iron, stainless steel, and other modern materials, the facility's atmosphere is wholly that of a traditional samurai estate. The facility has a tourism pamphlet area and exhibition corner and you can learn about the history and culture of the area or take a break and rest in between exploring the town. ""Maido-san"" volunteer sightseeing guides are always on hand, so feel free to make use of their services and get guidance on the Nagamachi neighborhood."

The site of Nagamachi Samurai Residences are the manor ruins of middle-class samurai in the Kaga clan, and its ”Komogake” straw supports made for protecting the earthen wall from snow are a winter tradition in Kanazawa. There is an air of romance in the yellow, earthen wall with its shingled roof, and the Nagayamon gate with its samurai window. ,You can get a taste for what life was like back then by stopping by the Nomura Family Samurai Residence, which is open to the public.

This channel is a multipurpose water supply that is said to have played a major role in the construction of Kanazawa Castle in the old days. The channel extends 10 kilometers from its intake on the right bank of the Saikawa River above Sakurabashi, and it is an average of six meters wide as it flows across Naga-machi, passes through Nagadohe, and on to Showa-machi. Built more than 400 years ago, it is famous as Kanazawa's oldest water supply channel. It played an important role in the life of the castle town, defending the castle from enemies and from fire, and transporting wood when the snow melted. The section of the channel along Dohe is used for the water features of the gardens of elegant houses, and fireflies can be seen on its banks in the summer. The channel is a part of Kanazawa's traditional cityscape, and many households set up potted plants on benches along its banks.
