  • Murodo Terminal
    Travel / Tourism
    Toyama Pref. Nakanikawaguntateyamamachi Ashikuraji Muro
This bus terminal, part of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route, is the highest bus terminal in Japan. The terminal, which is the departure point for the Tateyama Highland Bus and the Tateyama Tunnel Trolley Bus, features the largest restaurant on the Alpen Route, a rooftop observation deck, a tea lounge, and more. Restaurant Tateyama, located inside of Hotel Tateyama, offers a variety of quick food options featuring the flavors of Toyama, like their shiroebi karaage-don sarasara-jiru set (fried broad velvet shrimp on rice and soup set). If you mail something from the Tateyama Mountain Top Branch Post Office on the first floor of the hotel, the staff will cancel your postage with a commemorative stamp.
  • Tateyama Tunnel Trolley Bus
    Travel / Tourism
Toyama Pref. Nakanikawaguntateyamamachi Ashikuraji Beechzaka outside 11 national forest Murododaira Hei
This underground trolley bus, the only one of its kind in Japan, operates in the 3.7 kilometer-long Tateyama Tunnel that runs right under Mt. Oyama, the main peak of Mt. Tate. It is notable for how it runs on electricity provided by overhead lines, just like a train. This prevents exhaust gasses from accumulating inside the tunnel and also helps protect the natural environment. The trolley bus departs every 30 minutes and reaches the next station in about 10 minutes. Riding inside the long tunnel that connects Daikanbo Station with Murodo Station almost feels like exploring a cave. Sightseeing information is broadcast on the intercom during the ride, which increases passengers' excitement for the upcoming parts of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route.
  • Kurobe Cable Car
    Travel / Tourism
Toyama Pref. Nakanikawaguntateyamamachi Ashikuraji Beechzaka outside 11 national forest
This cable car, which traverses a 400-meters vertical distance at a maximum slope of 31 degrees, connects Kurobedaira Station to Kurobeko Station on the Kurobe Alpen Route. Japan's only completely underground cable car, the entire route was built inside of a tunnel in order to preserve the natural environment and protect the cable car from the snow. Make sure to check out the views from the front of the car. You will feel the excitement of a new adventure beginning as soon as the departure bell rings and the tunnel lights turn on. Passengers love the retro appearance of the cable cars, which have not changed in appearance since entering operation in 1969.
  • Tateyama Highland Bus
    Travel / Tourism
Toyama Pref. Nakanikawaguntateyamamachi Ashikuraji Buna Slope Foreign Forest
These busses operate between Bijodaira Station and Murodo Station on the Kurobe Alpen Route, a vertical distance of around 1,500 meters. Mt. Tateyama's Murodo-daira, an area that sees some of the world's heaviest snowfall, is famous for Yuki no Otani. These massive snow walls can be seen from April to June. It is a stunning sight to watch the 20 meter-tall walls pass within centimeters of the busses' windows. Many passengers got off at one of the bus stops along on the route to enjoy its many attractions. These include the area's massive Tateyama cedar trees, a viewing platform where visitors can see Shomyo Falls, and more. Informational videos that provide information on these attractions play on monitors inside the bus.

Toyama Areas

around-area-map

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
