This natural park located a 15-minute drive from the Noetsu Expressway's Takaoka Interchange was opened in 1875 on the site of Takaoka Castle, originally built by Maeda Toshinaga. The park, surrounded by three moats that have remained almost untouched since the castle was built, is one of Japan's few moated parks. The large 210,000 square-meter park houses a number of facilities including Imizu-jinja Shrine, a zoo, a museum, a gymnasium, and more. The park is home to many examples of cherry blossoms, Japanese maples, Japanese zelkovas, pine trees, and other species. It has also been selected as one of Japan's best 100 cherry blossoms viewing spots and is the main venue for the Takaoka Manyo Festival.
