A Japanese sweet shop a seven-minute walk from Hase Station on the Enoshima Electric Railway. The shop is located on the approach to Goryo-jinja Shrine, which is dedicated to the superhumanly strong Kamakura Gongoro Kagemasa, hence the shop’s name, which references chikara mochi, rice cakes said to fortify the body, and the Japanese term for someone who is strong. Chikaramochiya’s delicately flavored sweets, carefully homemade without additives, have been popular since the Edo period. The shop’s famed Gongoro chikara mochi are made with smooth strained sweet adzuki bean paste wrapped in mochi rice cake. If you will be eating them the same day, be sure to get the “nama” or fresh type, made with freshly pounded mochi. The gyuhi (rice flour) type keeps for three days and makes a great souvenir.

How could you resist having something from this shop? The smell coming from the kitchen is enticing and then the visual feast. What to choose? Well everyone will tell you the mochi (glutenous sweet...
