  • Murano Tsuneemon House
    Travel / Tourism
Tokyo Machida-shi Nozutamachi 1256-1 Nozuta Park Uchi
A late Edo period building in Machida's Nozuta Park. Originally located along the city's Tsurumi River, it was donated to Machida before being transferred to and rebuilt at its current location. Tsuneemon Murano was one of the Tama district's leading democracy activists. He was born in the house, and it underwent major renovations in 1924 when its thatched roof was replaced with iron plating. This is the building you see at the park today. A typical residence of the times, it also has furniture from the era on display, giving a feel for life in the Meiji period.
  • Old battlefield of Idenosawa
    Travel / Tourism
Tokyo Machida-shi Honmachida 802 Sugawara Jinja Keidai
The place where the Battle of Idenosawa took place in 1335. It is reported that Ashikaga Tadayoshi (Takauji's younger brother) intercepted the troops of Hojo Tokiyuki who were moving south from Shinshu to reestablish the Kamakura Shogunate. At present, Sugawara Shrine is there, which honors Sugawara Michizane. Idenosawa was said to be a key point on the road leading from northern Kanto to Kamakura, and it is speculated that its topography and landforms created a natural fortress.
  • Osato no Tamaishigaki
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Hachijomachi Okago
"Hachijojima Island, surrounded by rich nature, is in an area that has been subject to violent storms since ancient times. The beautiful ""Tamaishigaki,"" made by arranging groups of six stones around one round stone, were created in order to protect houses from damage by wind and rain. You can see Tamaishigaki across the whole island, but those in the Osato district are particularly well preserved, on a large scale, and are a famous sight of Hachijojima Island, frequently appearing on tourism posters. There is a theory that the systematically built Tamaishigaki were constructed by exiles who carried rocks up from the coast. It is a spot where you can calmly stroll along while thinking about the location's history."

    Tokyo Kita-ku Shimo 5

Tokyo Areas

around-area-map

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
