"Although officially founded in 1868, the name of this venerable confectionary shop can be found in documents from the late Edo period. Its most famous offering is its Koin Monaka. These monaka (bean jam-filled wafer cakes) feature a motif inspired by the ancient official seals (Koin) of the Ashikaga Clan. Other popular items include its Koin Senbei (rice crackers), Takauji Senbei and Takauji (Dorayaki, bean jam filled pancake) , the latter of which was inspired by the character of the Ashikaga Takauji, the first Ashikaga shogun. Another popular item is their Monaka Gokko, which allows you to enjoy the classic flavor of monaka in a casual ""make it yourself"" style."

This Japanese confectionary shop was established in 1948. The shop continues to make additive-free confections by hand using the choicest ingredients and Sano's famous spring water. The shop's popular Sanomaru Sweets Monaka wafer cakes, modeled after 2013 Yuru-Chara Grand Prix-winning local mascot character Sanomaru-kun, are stuffed with a hearty helping of a filling made by hand from Hokkaido azuki beans. The cute appearance of the wafer cakes is particularly popular with women and children. The Karasawayama dorayaki pancake sandwiches, baked one at a time and filled with a handmade Hokkaido Dainagon azuki bean filling, also make delightful little presents.

A 3-minute walk from Sano Yakuyo Daishi, this Japanese confectioner sells Daifuku, Dorayaki, Yokan, etc. The limited-time strawberry Daifuku is a popular item with large local strawberries wrapped in a soft rice cake; the subtle sourness of the strawberries enhances the refined sweetness of the red bean paste. Kusa-mochi (rice cake with soybean flour) is also popular.

This Japanese confectionary shop is a five-minute walk from Ashikaga Park, a famous destination for viewing cherry and azalea blossoms. Operating out of an old-fashioned-looking establishment, the shop continues to devote itself to making yokan jelly primarily using azuki beans from Tokachi in Hokkaido. The sugar and kanten algae gelatin also used to make this yokan is carefully chosen to ensure it does not impact the flavor of the azuki beans, and customers love its simple yet deep flavor. The popular Soun Yokan is made according to an old-fashioned method in which the fresh jelly is poured into stainless steel trays to form it as it cools. This jelly has won the chief judge's award in the National Confectionary Exposition.

Tochigi Areas

around-area-map

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
